Had this same issue with an MS28 I have had since 2006.  I resolved the flashing after using JF 1.55b.  I never had a problem seeing the drive after using the 530c driver for the VIA SATA chipset, prior to installing those drivers, my MS28 was invisible.

Second issue to overcome was the drive not going into vendor mode.  I got it in by holding down the power button after cycling the power off then on and watching the power supply light change from orange back to green.  If you hold it down while its orange, just flipping it off while give you a very fast power cycle.

Third issue when I got it into vendor mode was 2 bad reads of the OFW.  Two banks on the chip should up with a few Xs instead of all dots.  Had to read it twice to get all dots.  Once flashed, the drive performs great with all stealthed backups.

Hope this helps you in some way bud, I nearly lost it after 5 hours of trying everything I knew to see this damn thing in windows but I got to say, JF ftw!

Thanks for the support so far guys!  I just got home from a trip and will try each answer one by one and report back with my (hopeful) success.

I also forgot to say that I have modded plenty of Xbox 360's before, but this stupid ms28 is the first one of its kind to pass my way (mostly Hitachis or benQ).  So yea, I have PortIO and all the other good stuff, my computer has had no problems with modding anyone else's box, but this drive just doesn't want to be seen ever!

Stay tuned, I need to get this guy's drive swapped by 6pm tonight...

I tried your solutions (DoSFlash didn't ask me to turn drive off...?) and none of them worked.  I have the VIA VT6421 chipset PCI card, btw.

Any other help?  I'm going to see if my computer will still find my ms28 drive read fast...

EDIT: Turned on my 360 and jungle flasher found the drive, no problem.  Imight as well update to 1.51 while it's here lol!

Hardie, I tried those as well when I first went through with about 3 different versions of iprep and updating ixdef every time to newest.  I was able to reflash myms28 drive from my Xbox 360 (the one with problems is a customer's) no problem just now, so I think it must be the drive.

What's everyone's take on that?

when using the old iprep like what i said you dont need portio driver installed just the via card drivers as the card works well with iprep in MTK flash to put in vendor mode anyway
never had a problem with any samsung flashing this way
is it possible the drives spoofed

What's the problem with a spoofed drive?  I'm trying to spoof it as BenQ in the end obviously, but once I spoof it, is it permanently invisible?  He got the drive from a RROD 360, so he has no idea on the condition of the drive.
