Problem Spoofing Hitachi To Be A Benq
« on: March 27, 2009, 09:35:00 PM »

I have searched the forums and found a few threads almost the same as my problem but not quite.
I had a benq which I recently flashed to 1.51 and it worked great until yesterday when it wouldn't read any of my backups or my originals.
I had a hitachi 47 lying around from my old 360 so I decided to spoof it. It seemed to go well and my 360 will play originals but will not play my backups. It doesn't even try and read the backups it just says reading then open tray.
I then decided to try reflashing it again incase I did something wrong.
So I popped in my slax CD and rebooted my pc. It wouldn't go into mode b. So I booted up XP and the drive was found by jungle flasher as a benq but it wouldn't read of write to the drive.
How can I resolve my problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Ya slax sucks. One you spoof the Hitachi to something like a benq or liteon or probably even samsung slax can no longer find it to put it in mode b.
When this happened to me i used the command prompt dos utility modeb.exe

modeb xxxx    (where xxxx is the port you have your hitachi connected to)

But the reality of your problem is this. If its reading originals then you must have flashed it right. Unless you somehow flashed it with a original but it sounds like you know enough about what your doing that that is not it.

I bet either your laser is weak or your burns are weak or both.

I have been changing lasers steady in benq lately. Normally i only get hitachi's and samsungs into my shop but it seems benq laser fail just as often. If i were you i would try buying a laser and getting the benq working again.

You can try to do a pot tweak to improve your hitachi's performance while you wait for parts.

I am out of stock of benq lasers at the moment but i will have more by the end of next week.

Thanks Syntax, you have confirmed my original thoughts. I can't solder to save my life so I think I'll try and get another benq and just swap it out rather than changing the laser. All my backups are recorded on verbs at 2.4 speed so I don't think its the media that's at fault.
I'll just switch back to my originals until I get another drive.
