Benq Tray Won't Open After Successful Flash?
« on: March 11, 2009, 03:55:00 AM »

Thought I'd help a friend flash his Elite Benq drive, no problem, i fix for you!

Big mistake!

What I first did was to use JungleFlasher. It read out original Fw fine. Saved that and the key. Tried flashing ixtreme 1.51 through jungleflasher. Looked promising while writing to the bank but failed at end (write verify failed!). Read somewhere that this could happen and that it probably would work. Hooked up 360...error 65 (I think).

So, prepared an USB flash with dosflasher. Managed to erase and write back old FW that I read out from JF. Writes OK...problem is. Benq drivetray wont open. 360 just stays at startup screen (animated xbox logo). It just stays there. No red ring...no nothing. Hooked up drive again and read out current FW and compared to the original one I had stored and they are identical (atleast what I can see)

So...what to do? Is the drive "bricked"? I CAN communicate with it through my VIA chipset but just not get it up and running. Could there be something wrong with the FW?

I'm out of ideas! Help much appreciated!

Cheers

Take his key and put it into the ixtreme 1.51 firmware and flash it again. Use the dosflash method as its is really stable.

You might also want to manually eject the tray by spining the little pully at the front but i don't think that will help. It will just verify that the tray isn't jammed.

Thanks will try this!

What exactly do people mean when they say they have "bricked" their DVD? Is it stone dead or what? I was worried this is what happened to mine but since I'm still able to read/flash drive, I was not sure.

I think this is what they mean. The drive only has one use after its bricked

LOL!

Well...I was more thinking wether or not a "bricked" DVD infact could still let you read from/flash fw....or would it be stone dead, passed on, ceased to be, pushing up the daisies, expired and gone to meet its maker! :-D

a bricked drive cannot be restored/flashed

However, a bricked BenQ is almost impossible since you will be able to erase and reflash it.

If you can read/write the flash, but you can't eject the tray, it's most likely you've fried something.

Ouch! I hope you are wrong...but something tells me you are not.

Will try to flash it again today with new modded firmware. If that does'nt work...well...I guess I'm screwed....or....my friend is screwed. Ex-friend that is.

Thanks anyway!

You can always spoof a different drive so it acts as if it's the old BenQ, seeing how you have the original firmware stored. That way the 360 isn't screwed and can still be used as normal.

You da man!

I was totally sure the drive had a hw problem since it would not open the tray even when i successfully flashed back original FW. Also, when spinning the rubberwheel...usually the drive would open tray automaticall once you start spinning. This drive was not cooperating at all :-)

So...took orig.bin and downloaded new ixtreme 1.5 put that on my bootable USB...used firmtool in DOS to create a new hacked.bin. Flashed that to drive. That was all there was to it. All is good!

I still don't understand why it wouldn't work with the original FW on there but then again...the the F cares! :-)

Thanks alot to all of of you for tips
