How Does Hitachi 79 Fried Itself?
« on: March 10, 2009, 09:46:00 AM »

Ok so, since I'm an idiot and haven't checked the xbox hacking scene in like 6 months, I simply assumed the only method was still to use the maximus passkey, so I got one.

While removing the epoxy I managed to rape the connectors since the solder tip was so damn sharp so the only was to use the key was to dick around holding it in place next to the pins from the 'SST' chip. I had a hard time soldering the 3.3V wire as well, I really fail.

So I get to reading what's been happening here and long story short I use podger's unlocker (fucking awesome BTW) and everything works as it plays a Halo 3 backup.

I sleep on it and the next day I decide to get rid of the 3.3V line since I won't be needing the passkey.
I use a nail clipper to cut the solderpoint (don't laugh) and test the drive again: It's bricked, the 360 is led flashing and the drive won't eject or do anything.

I have spent the last 4 hours trying to get this fixed, I tryed adding solder on the 3.3V line I nail clipped but no luck at all. I've also tryed wiping all the connectors, power cable pins, used a diff SATA cable.

So besides my legendary idiocy, what's wrong with this picture?

fucked up power cable? static killed the drive? my stupid nail clipper desoldering method? the connectors I broke @ the epoxy removal? (unlikely since it worked fine after that)

PS: I'm going to order a SAMSUNG MS28 drive tomorrow (only one I can get without importing), I still have the key and original firmware from the 79, so using it on the SAMSUNG will work, right?

That's great then thanks, Takashi!

Also, I just tested the drive power cable with a PC fan, all 8 wires are good, so yeah I guess the constant abuse made the 79 nuke itself.

I'm gonna try to dick around with it more while I wait for the samung, who knows.

Suggestions on what to try are welcome.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Is a spoof necessary though ? I've googled around and it seems a bit dangerous, Can't I just extract the SAMSUNG's firmware, add my 79 key and then use toolbox to hack it to play backups, then simply flash it?

or do keys have a specific format for each drive brand?

sorry if it's a noob question  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

You have no choice but to spoof. If you don't spoof your new drive as your old one then your console will not boot into dashboard.

ok, thanks for the clarification.

this 79 has always been bad news, I'm gonna go smash it to bits after I take out the lens.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/muhaha.gif)

Lol ya its a pain in the ass.

On my old Elite the H79 would not work on my newly built pc with a 750i motherboard, and it did not even work after buying the VIA card.

However it worked on my 4-5 year old Dell with onboard SATA.

Wtf?

Post some pics of the smashing!

Ok, my samsung drive just arrived, I've looked around in a few tutorials on here and several other sites but I'm still a bit scared since some say yes some say no.

Can the samsung be flashed with toolbox or not? if yes then a link to a good step by step guide would be very welcome

Also, witch iXtreme firmware version would be best for this?
