It seems almost impossible to restore a hitachi. I have one I can't restore myself.

Open tray usualy means you need a bumper on your laser carage, its actually more to do with your burner than your media or drive.
when hitachis try to read a disc they dont spin out far enough to find the first bit of data on the disc sad.gif  Therefore you need to glue someting (I find the rubber foot off a wii is just the right size about 2 or 3 mm biggrin.gif ) to the white bit on your laser carrage that connects to a small switch (also white). This makes your laser stay a bit further out and so it catches the first bit of data when it spins up.

Alright, I know this is a big bump but I still need some help here, my friend is over again and we are trying again to flash his 360 to 1.51.

I am considering trying this laser fix, but I would like to know a couple of things first...

Is there a detailed tutorial somewhere on these forums? I'm not exactly sure what this procedure is called so I'm not sure what to search for.

Also - his xbox used to play backups fine on 1.4, so we just tried restoring it to 1.4 and the my computer told me that all went well, however, it still can't play backups... If it was a problem with the laser, would it stop reading backups so suddenly? Or could I have messed it up trying to flash it last time? ...The xbox plays original games flawlessly, could the flashing could have messed up and the drive is still stock?

Any help is still much appreciated, thank you.
