Could I use(IMG:http://content.etilize.com/Large/11970747.jpg)? Its a usb graphlink connector for a ti 83 calculator. I took it apart and it has three wires red, black, and white coming from the board. I couldn't find a pin out anywhere

so i have to solder for this?

You don't, I choose to solder my wire to the needle(probe)..But its not Necessary, you just need a good connection between the wire and the needle(and make sure it holds). Most people just wire it around the needle a couple of times then use electrical tape to hold it in place.

Don't know, open up the casing and look if there's an RS232-TTL chip on the PCB, then google its name. Does the cable show up as a COM device when you plug it into the PC? I'm about 70% sure it wont work, simply because there's only 3 wires. On the other hand, its a calculator cable and could differ from the cellphone ones.

zibalingz, Unfortunately, not all CA-42 cables work..this is due to the fact there's a bunch of different manufacturers, and they use different components. I have no idea how many there are and/or which ones work. A cable with just 3 wires as in your case, leads me to believe its not going to work. Mine has i think 6 wires going out but keep in mind its a Nokia DKU-5. I haven't been reading this thread in a while since it seem to have managed pretty well from other people helping each other, So there might be someone with the same type of cable as you, which posted earlier. I would try to find information on your specific PCB and see if there's someone else which had 3 wires only. I recommend checking pinouts.ru they have pretty good info.

Btw, it looks like there's a couple of solder points that aren't connected to a wire, one of them could be RX..but you'll have to google that RS232-> TTL chip, in order to find the correct one.

CA-42 cables with 3 wires work fine. In fact I think it's better if you get one of those because you only have 3 wires to choose from. You can find the ground wire by doing a continuity test with a multimeter from one of the wires to the metal outer casing on the USB plug. Then you can just use trial and error on the drive with the remaining two wires until it retrieves your key. You don't even need to cut the USB plug open.

will that work? so i cut of the phone plug end, strip teh casing, and figure which wire is the rx?

not sure what most are doing, connecting 2 together? i connect 2 wires to test them, and type? do i type on the keyboard/ and in what program?

I'm super excited to report that my probe worked flawlessly!!

I managed to solder back the orange wire @ 6 and the blue wire @ 12, it broke ... I soldered that too! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Then I just prayed "buzz44" was right about the red wire @ 9 being Rx and I soldered a needle to the end of the stripped red wire and used a pen to encase it.

I also twisted the red and blue wires together for testiing  in terraterm, realterm and hyperterminal and got some loopback when I entered some random text.

From there I just went out bought a via sata card, had lots of trouble with it due to Vista x64  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grr.gif) Installed XP and then used the 360's power while flashing in Jungleflasher.

I was a nervous wreck!! My hands were shaking, I couldn't even set the needle in R707  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) in the end the probe worked!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)  got the key ..I managed to successfully flash my lite-on to 1.6.

Special thanks to buzz44 and Datenshiz and everyone else.

Ill post some pics of my probe later.

Same cable in the ebay link you posted, I don't think all cables are wired the same on the inside.
I mean every ca-42 cable could be different, especially the generic ones compared to original ones.
Its best you choose either a dku-5 or a ca-42, 45 cable and carefully pry it open to see how its wired.
If it matches to the one I posted or someone else's then you can pretty much deduce which wire is  Rx.

If you really wanna be sure do a little test with a multimeter or the twisting wires to check in some terminal programs.

What You're looking for is the Rx wire, which in my case was the red one. You solder a 10k resistor ( I didn't do this (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) ) to it and then a needle to that resistor, encase the whole thing in a pen or sumthin and you're good to go.

Also you need to chop off the serial end of the cable ..the end which connects into the phone.

Drivers - Very IMP!!

I used Prolific PL-2303, it works on XP and Vista as well.

Good luck! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Sounds accurate, I don't have any experience with CA-42 cables so i was basically going by what my DKU-5 looked like hence 70% not 99% (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) . Either way its good to know and a good method for testing out cables if you have a multimeter, I don't..which is a shame, as I've needed one quite a few times.

Great to hear (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) good work. It's so awesome when you're nervous before trying something out and then when its done and successful..hoof the relief  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) When i first did this i almost pooped my pants i was so nervous, i had bought the xbox360 a couple of hours before doing it, so it would have been so sad if i wrecked my Xbox.

Thanks it worked perfectly! I had a ca-42 with three wires and the tx was on pin 9 for some reason compared to the others. But I've flashed 3 lite on drives with it (first time) (first try) Thanks! love.gif

Which cable do you recommend on ebay? There is the DKU-5 and CA-42, but most of them don't look official. Can someone give me a link to a working cheap one?
