HOW TO FLASH A LITEON FOR DUMMIES (THE IM-RICK-JAMES-BITCH METHOD)

Ok I decided to write this tutorial for all the following reasons:
- All the people out there who are confused about all the applications/tutorials out there!
- For all those people whose machines hang when try to erase or write a Lite-On firmware
- For all those people whose JungleFlasher crashes when they open it or try read/dump the key with it.

This method has been tried & tested and it's proven to work countless times by a lot of users on this forum (forums.xbox-scene.com), although that being said it may not work for everyone.

There aren't many images and troubleshooting steps atm so if you find it hard to follow my apologies.

The basic process to flash a Lite-On drive is as follows:

- Dump the key from the Lite-On with 2 applications.
- Compare the result sets from both applications.
- Prepare the iXtreme v1.5 firmware by injecting the key into it.
- Erasing the current firmware on the Lite-On drive.
- Write the new prepared firmware.

Before continuing this tutorial assumes you have the following:

- The Maximus Xtractor and Spear OR Team Executor CK3 and Spear OR the kit from DIYGADGET OR a homemade kit with an NPN transistor etc...
- DO NOT USB THE USB ADAPTOR ON EITHER OF THE TOOLS. THIS TUTORIAL HAS NOT BEEN TESTED WITH THE USB CONNECTION AND MORE THAN LIKELY WILL NOT WORK! YOU NEED TO USE THE COM PORT ON YOUR PC (if you don't have one then find another tutorial to follow)
- You can use a connectivity kit or an xbox360 to power the dvd drive. Both will work.

Things to do and get before you start:

1> Download this file (1.05MB).  It has all tools required except the iXtreme Firmware which is copyright. Password: forums.xbox-scene.com
CODE
http://www.betterupload.com/218691
or
http://www.bitsalad.com/download.php?file=e2ae31317af85a6b4414e946b2eeff6d
or
http://www.upload-hosting.net/download.php?file=e2ae31317af85a6b4414e946b2eeff6d

2> Once you have that extract it to you c drive. Install PORTIO and then turn your PC off and unplug it from the wall.
3> Connect the sata cable and the power cable to the Lite-On drive. Also connect your key reader (CK3, Maximus Xtractor etc) to the com port with a serial cable or directly (DIYGADGET.com tool) etc...
4> Plug pc in and turn on the pc. The xbox360 drive should power on now as well.

READING THE KEY WITH MAXIMUS XTRACTOR READER
1> Run XtractorReader.exe and click "Search All Sata Ports and Scan for 360 Drives", "Yes", "Yes". "Yes". Now if you read the results list window you should see what sataport your drive is connected to.

(IMG:http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2074/a30finishedsearchingrd9.jpg)

2> Now click “Detect” and it should popup saying no USB etc….It most cases com port 1 is the one to use. If not try the 2nd and 3rd com ports if they exist.
3> Now eject the drive tray from the xbox360 drive.
4> Disconnect the power to the drive! If you are using a connectivity kit then unplug it, if you using an xbox360 to power the drive then unplug the connector from drive itself (do not turn xbox360 off).
5> Push the tray half way in then reconnect the power to the dvd drive.
6> Now insert the probe into the R707 hole and click the “Get Key and Files” button.
7> After 5 seconds or so it should popup a save dialog box if successful.

(IMG:http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7924/savefilesai4.jpg)

(IMG:http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/5717/successfullysavedoj8.jpg)

8> Choose to save it directly to the root of the c drive. It will save the following files:
Identify.bin
Inquiry.bin
Key.bin
Rename those files to:
Identify-Xtractor.bin
Inquiry-Xtractor.bin
Key-Xtractor.bin

Now close XtractorReader_V27.

READING THE KEY WITH DVDKEY32
1> Open a command prompt window and browse to the DVDKey32 folder.
2> Disconnect the power to the drive! If you are using a connectivity kit then unplug it, if you using an xbox360 to power the drive then unplug the connector from drive itself (do not turn xbox360 off).
3> Push the tray half way in then reconnect the power to the dvd drive.
4> Now insert the probe into the R707 hole and keep it there.
5> Now in the command prompt window type “DVDKey32.exe SATAPORT COMPORT” without the quotes and press enter. eg “DVDKey32.exe 4400 1”. You get the SATAPORT from step 1 of READING THE KEY WITH MAXIMUS XTRACTOR READER.
6> It should say key retrieve successfully and it will save the following files into the same directory that DVDKey resides:
Identify.bin
Inquiry.bin
Key.bin
Dummy.bin
Rename those files to:
Identify-DVDKey.bin
Inquiry- DVDKey.bin
Key- DVDKey.bin

Leave Dummy.bin. Do not rename it!
Now copy those 3 files directly to the root of the c drive.

DOING THE COMPARE
1> Now we will compare the 2 sets of files created with the 2 different applications.
On your c drive you should see the following:
Identify-DVDKey.bin
Inquiry- DVDKey.bin
Key- DVDKey.bin
Identify-Xtractor.bin
Inquiry-Xtractor.bin
Key-Xtractor.bin
Now open a command prompt window and navigate to the c drive by typing “cd \”
Then type the following:
“fc.exe /b Identify-DVDKey.bin Identify-Xtractor.bin” and press enter.
“fc.exe /b Inquiry-DVDKey.bin Inquiry-Xtractor.bin” and press enter.
“fc.exe /b Key-DVDKey.bin Key-Xtractor.bin” and press enter.
This should be the results.

(IMG:http://img70.imageshack.us/img70/2447/donecmpab2.png)

If that’s all good you can zip ALL the files (including the Dummy.bin file) created by DVDKey32 and those created by Xtractor Reader. Once done email them to yourself so you will always have a backup.
Now you can press eject and close the drive. Once the key is extracted the drive tray no longer needs to be in any state…So just close it.

PREPARING THE FIRMWARE
1> Now delete Identify-Xtractor.bin, Inquiry-Xtractor.bin, Key-Xtractor.bin.
2> Now rename Identify-DVDKey.bin, Inquiry- DVDKey.bin, Key- DVDKey.bin to Identify.bin, Inquiry.bin and Key.bin.
3> So now  you should have 4 files in that folder. Identify.bin, Inquiry.bin, Key.bin and Dummy.bin. Now copy the Lite-On iXtreme firmware to the same folder.
4> Now copy Firmtool.exe into the same folder as the 4 files above.
5> Open a command prompt window and type “FIRMTOOL.exe Dummy.bin iXtreme.bin” or whatever you called it.

ERASING THE FIRMWARE
1> Create a bootable flash drive or bootable cd and copy the following files onto the root of the drive/cd:
-L-O-ERAS.EXE
-DosFlash.typ
-DosFlash.exe
- and the prepared lite-on iXtreme firmware.
3> Reboot your machine and leave everything plugged in then boot to the flashdrive/cd.
4> Browse to the root of the drive/cd and type the following: “L-O-ERAS.EXE SATAPORT” and press enter. The result you looking for is XX72 eg: FF72. When you get xx72 it means the firmware has been erased.
Some people have issues with this step and saying the sent the command a 100 times with no xx72. If you have sent it 10 times with no xx72 then disconnect power to the drive, wait 5 seconds, then reconnect the power to the drive. Now resent the “L-O-ERAS.EXE SATAPORT” command another 10 times or until you get xx72.

WRITING THE FIRMWARE
Once erased type the following:
1> “Dosflash.exe” and press enter.
2> Select your drive number from the list (mine was 4) and press enter.
3> Type “W“ and press enter.
4> Type the name of your prepared firmware and press enter.
If you get an error about “unknown flash chip”  then start from step 1 of writing the firmware again. If you still get the error then disconnect power to the drive, wait 5 seconds, then reconnect the power….Then from step 1 of writing the firmware again…

Good Luck!!!

"3> Connect the sata cable and the power cable to the Lite-On drive"<--- Do you mean SATA cable from PC or from Xbox ?

"3> Now eject the drive tray from the xbox360 drive.

5> Push the tray half way in then reconnect the power to the dvd drive."

Shall these steps be done with PC, Xbox or none SATA cable connected to Liteon drive ?

I've got Liteon connected to xbox power, and I've connected it to the TV. Says "Opening" on dvd tray status when i perform these steps..
------------------------------

Quick last question, I've soldered R707 (the two pins together) and the R708 (the two pins together). I've now read that you only need R707, can i desolder R708 then ? And on R707, must i solder down to that little hole, or is that only for using a spear ?

Cheers !

Nice guide mate, thanks for taking the time to write this up.

Maybe put quotes around the filenames, the first time I read this I thought "you can't have three files all named Xtractor.bin in the same directory..."

Sata cable must always remain connected to the drive.
If you using a connectivity kit for power disconnect the molex from it.
If you using an xbox360 to power the drive then disconnect the power cable going to the drive itself.

That's correct. Don't worry about what the dashboard says....

If you solder R707 then you don't need to use a spear.
You can leave R707 soldered once you done.
Not sure if leaving R708 soldered will affect anything.

I done a couple of these by soldering R707 & 708 (dont think 708 needs doin anyway). There is no need to desolder them once done.
To solder them I use a bit of kynar stripped and tinned at one end only, and just dab it on with the solderin iron. Then cut off the excess wire with nail clippers. You dont need a big blob of solder on that iron and if you do put too much on be very carefull removing it, you dont want to suck up the resistors next to 707 & 708.

This is why people don't need to solder those points!! Just make a simple spear yourself, works a charm! Here's the tutorial, no messy solder, no risk, no twitchy hands ( a LOT of people will go into shock when they see how SMALL those r707/708 points are). Just scratch the silicon around r707 base point first! This'll save you $15 btw!

wow, it worked smile.gif

Your guide was great and worked from start to end. What fixed it for me was new wires and better soldering from rs232 to drive though smile.gif

I had some issue with this at first, but I remembered this from another tut.

"5> Now in the command prompt window type “DVDKey32.exe SATAPORT” without the quotes and press enter...." <--- You must enter your COM port after SATAPORT.

Thank you very very much !

Glad it worked for you Richard smile.gif Thanks I have pm'd sosotit to fix that typo smile.gif Should be "DVDKey32.exe SATAPORT COMPORT" eg: DVDKey32.exe 4400 1

I have a problem getting the drive to work, i hope some someone can help me out.

I used a maximus xtractor pro with spear and the maximus tool to get the 3 files, i used the jungleflasher tool to merge them into a dummy.bin. And firmtool to merge the dummy with the ix15.bin.

At first only the firmtool returns with a 'Wisely Loves Lan' error.
This should not be a problem so i flashed anyway, i used l-o-eras to erase and dosflash to flash.

Now i have this e-64 error when back into the xbox and the drive wont respond to eject but it can be flashed again.

so i did the firmtool again with a fresh made dummy2.bin file from the 3 files i got before.
Now firmtool responds "no source for serial" and i flashed it again using dosflash only to get the same result i got before.

My question: is there something wrong with one of the errors i get?
And even better, how can i solve them?

Tnx!

Sorry I don't know that method as I dont know jungleflasher. I think you will need to make a new topic dedicated to your problem. This thread is for issues if you used the method in the first post.
