Samsung Ms28

Hi,

So I recently decided to flash my 360 with the new iXtreme 1.5 firmware. I have a Samsung ms28 and I used iPrep .08 Beta to prepare the files necessary on my main drive then used the NTFS2CD method to boot into DOS and went from there. I thought I did everything right, I dumped the firmware, everything went well and then I flashed it. It loaded 4 times and I thought GREAT! Unfortunately, when I connected it to the TV I realized I fucked up.

I got error 65 on the screen and the bottom right LED of the front of the box is lit up red. So at this point I thought I could restore the firmware so I tried an rSam command to no avail. I had someone help me out and I sent him my original Bin file along with the other Bin file under Backups. Turns out my original was 1kb and the other one was 256kb, but full of 0's.

At this point I realized I'm pretty fucked because I can't restore. Now, I don't know too much about how DVD drives work, but from what I could tell I desperately need this original.bin file to contain the key of my DVD drive as it was originally. Unfortunately, I have no idea where to even start to get the key off this drive. Is it even possible? This is why I'm here, I'm completely stuck having spent a total of about 16 hours next to my opened up PC and 360. I've tried pretty much everything to try to reflash it, dump the firmware again, restore the firmware, etc.

I've pretty much given up on this DVD drive so I went looking for a replacement online. I saw Samsung ms28 drives for an average of like $40 online so I was pretty happy. Then I kept reading and I saw that they were blank drives and I needed the original key from the DVD drive I murdered. That's when my happiness slipped away. Now what do I do? Do I have any options? Is there somewhere I can take the drive so the key can be retrieved? Can I do anything myself? ANY help is welcome because I _really_ do not want to and also CANNOT afford to spend another $200 on a 360.

Thanks.

If you extracted the key correctly from your original drive and flashed the drive with the right key, probably it can be extracted. If you screwed up the key extraction when you first did it, then you have no choice but to spend those $200.

Did you update your iprep definitions to the latest one?

Yes, I updated the definition file.

I'm actually not entirely sure where the process went wrong. I'm assuming when I typed "dSam xxxxxx...xxx..." it did not really dump my firmware correctly because the bin files under the "Backups" folder are really pretty worthless. I'm assuming then that if this is the case, the firmware that I flashed on my 360 is not really of any use?

As of now, I can't use any of these commands anymore: dSam, fSam, rSam. They all stall. Basically, I type in the command followed by the serial number and I can see my drive in the list. There's only 1: Xtreme .... I forgot the full name. I can see the listing there so I power off the 360, I press 1 to choose that drive, and then I wait a while after which I turn the 360 on again. Unfortunately, nothing happens. I've timed with: 30 seconds, 15, 10, 5, 3, and immediately after I choose the drive.

Also, I made a mistake in my first post which you made me realize just now. I tried using iPrep v.08, but for some reason it didn't work out. The actual dSam and fSam commands were done with iPrep v.06. Since then, I've tried both versions to run any of the commands and none of them affect my DVD drive whatsoever.

EDIT: Someone told me that it IS possible to get the matching DVD drive key off the motherboard, but it's kind of only theoretical and that I wouldn't find anyone that could do it. My biggest question at this point is really where I could find someone that could do something like that so I can get another Samsung ms28 and flash that key/firmware on it. I've kind of given up on anything DVD drive related as it seems to do nothing at this point.

It wouldn't happen.  You're out of luck.  You have to use a program and hope that your original firmware that you dumped does indeed have a good key on it.

If not, you have to buy a new 360.

was it hacked to begin with...if so then you should have restored the drive before reflashing it to 1.5

People need to quit using these Iprep and other tools.

Its not to hard to use MTKFLASH or Dosflash!!!!!

Mtkflash r /m orig.bin
firmtool orig.bin hacked.bin
Mtkflash w /m hacked.bin

Those are the only 3 commands you need to do in DOS to flash a samsung drive!  I don't see a need for Iprep.

I haven't tried to use the new dosflash to flash a MS28, but I know you can use dosflash 1.4, when it sees your samsung drive, you select the port its on, select read, then it will flash the drive status, remove power, restore power, save file as orig.bin.  Then do firmtool orig.bin hacked.bin, then repeat the step above and just do write, then enter hacked.bin as the file to right done.

Using these other "automated" tools is a risk not worth taking.  If you do it yourself and you know its done right!
