If you want a good solderless solution, add the Spear to the list

Or a paperclip.

On that list was the ck3 pro.  Unless I'm mistaken, I didn't think you were able to use the spear with the ck3 also.  I thought you could only use it with the xtractor, and you have to use the probe with the ck3.

So he would probably want to add the probe to that list.  (just mentioning so there is no confusion)

to those ordering parts just get the ck3 lite and make your own probe, its easy cut one wire and solder it onto another wire with a pin on the end of it, its really easy even if you cant soldercause you cant mess it up

You don't need a "probe" or a "spear" to read your key, nor do you need to make your own. Just use a screwdriver with a flat head.

you dont see nothing in a memory chip under a microscopy, even under a electronic microscopy. it has to be read an electricaly.. you cant read the memory externally because you dont have direct access to memory die only the controller can access it and controller dont has a command / or at least a known command to read the entiry memory.. decaping the package allow them to access memory directly. allowing then to read it normaly.. the problem is who has a laser capable of decaping a tsop package? well i use one everyday! smile.gif

Really, so you can't photo a chip and read it contents?  Wondering what the mame geeks have been doing for years then?   MAME Chip Decaping

your talking about ROM memory.. the memory in the liteon isn't ROM.. that photo is a ROM memory, not a PROM, not an EPROM and not an EEPROM, guess what it is not a flash either.. lol
the memory in the controller is flash memory.. if it was the same type of memory you showed you wont flash it! that kind of memory is made like that.. not made and then written

The Rules:
One of the main issues with decapping is that this method of data extraction can only be done with chips that contain MASKROM, it doesn't work for EPROM. In layman terms, MASKROM is kind of like an image of 0's and 1's that is 'moulded' into the chip die when it is manufactured. Those 0's and 1's are easy to see when magnified and given some time and experience can be decoded to produce binary code and/or data. This usually only works with older chips as many newer microcontrollers have added layers of protection and stealth that can defeat decapping methods and require much more effort and expense.

Ýes, i'm sorry, I meant the probe.

Almost the same thing, different name smile.gif

What I've read so far is that you don't need it (paperclip, screwdriver should work too) but I can't confirm those methods, I thought the wire, paperclip or screwdriver needed power

I was tempted to say the same thing, but I figured I would let you defend yourself first before I agreed with you.

Like Iriez said before, it's a complicated procedure.... and a n00b like stealth wouldn't understand it.

I wish I knew more on the process and how to do it.  I read through the guru's rom dump news.  I am guessing it just is fairly espensive to attempt to do it.

To think the c4eva and team was able to do it to the liteon drive, that's awesome

It was just explained. THEY DID NOT DO THE SAME as guru. The only similarity is that acid was used to expose the chip. The chip is not MASKROM and can't be read with a microscope... well.. maybe an electron scanning microscope... but then we are talking serious $$$

so I'm getting that it's flash memory, but I'm not entirely sure how they were able to read the code off of it, since photos weren't taken.  I guess they made some sort of a probe and were able to read off of it?  I've done tons of mods, but I'm really new to this whole decapping process and how code is read off of it.

(I understand photos weren't taken similar to guru's method)

I just love tech stuff, taking things apart, and I think it's pretty interesting, which is why I'm trying to understand it.  Not looking to get flamed or anything
