Help With Hitachi 0078 Drive
« on: October 12, 2008, 01:43:00 PM »

I have succeeded in putting the drive in Mode B, and it is visible in windows.
I am using windows vista too.
however, when I try to use firmware toolbox v4.8 i go to direct drive dump, and the HL-DT-STDVD-ROM is listed.  Then when I hit raw dump firmware as and choose a name I get cannot read from drive error.
how can I get arrount this?
I have tried various SATA ports on my computer and have the same result, it is strange because the drive shows up but i cannot read from it?
please help.
thanks.

Make sure you have your 360 drive selected. It should say something like Hitachi 0078 drive or something.

You also need to have a game disk in the drive as well.

I have the correct drive selected it says:
[HL-DT-STDVD-ROM ROM 0078]
and I have an original disk in as well.
When I put the disk in, it came up with a windows media player window which I then closed.
But still i cannot get it to dump the firmware.

Sounds like it's acting as a 79. Have you tried the 79unlock tool?

unplug any drives you don't need during the toolbox. Disable floppy and unplugged any sata and IDE dvd/cd drives

I have tried unplugging all other unnecessary drives.
And when I treated it as a 79 drive, I used the 79unlock tool.
The file played from the drive, and then I ran the command, and then the drive was unresponsive.
It would not eject or respond to any commands, and when I tried to run the FWToolbox, it just froze.
I am really getting frustrated with this drive now.
thanks.

still fighting with this 360 for the third straight day!
Here is where I am at now:
I can put it in ModeB and it is recognized in windows.
I have tried running the FWToolbox and it sees the hitachi drive, but when i try to dump is gives an error:
cannot read from drive

then I tried using the 79unlock technique in case it is a 79 labeled as a 78.
I played the track and executed the command, and when the drive is closed with the command executed it becomes unresponsive untill i restart the whole process.  When I try it with the drive open it is the same as not using the unlock command, still cannot read with FWToolbox.

I hope I am being specific enough so that someone can help please.
thanks.
