Lite-on = Unhackable?
« on: September 29, 2008, 10:53:00 PM »

can someone please clarify this for me?
I have taken the faceplate off my 360 and confirmed that i in fact do have a lite on drive.
I dont understand why the pdf guide provides instructions to hack a benQand a Lite-on if lite-on is unhackable?

It would seem from reading a few posts that all new arcade editions come with lite-on drives.  So whats my best option for getting an xbox that is hackable?  I also want to make sure i get the falcon version.

I'm pretty new to this so any advice would help.

You can hack a console with a LiteOn. It requires a spatial tool and some soldering skills to get the drive key and spoof data needed to replace the drive with one that can be hacked.

If you want to get a moddable 360, go to a Gamestop or other store, and ask for a refurbished 360. Or, go on ebay and get a BenQ falcon.

It seems like it might be a little tough and an easy way to brick my system...
I've soiderd before but im not totally comfortable doing it.
I'm not that comfortable buying something off Ebay as well because im scared about the XBOX getting the RROD also the console might alreeady be banned from LIVE.

Why does it say you can hack it in the guide?

Lets say i do try to hack it using the methods you suggested..... will the hack be any worse than if i had a different drive and did it the normal way?

if the lite-on drive is unhackable why does it say this in the guide?

"Philips/BenQ/LiteOn VAD6038 Tutorial
You will need:

VIA or NForce SATA chipset

iPrep 101 v006
This method only works with VIA or NForce SATA chipsets. Any other chipset requires soldering a switch to the drive and is covered in a tutorial"

So if i have one of those chipsets can i still not hack the drive?

Right just to claify one thing, no matter how many tutorials you look at the only way you are gonna mod this liteon any time sson is do use dvdkey/serial port etc and drive swap.

Now, one more thing.... BenQ + Lite-On + Philips are all the same company in effect.

So, what you wrote, and what I quoted apllies to the BenQ VAD6038

You have the Lite-On 16D2S

thank you for clarifying that for me.  I dont really like the idea of soidering anything or buying a new drive.  So I think my best option is just to return my 360 to walmart and just keep and eye out for systems manufactured before 4-24.  that way I'm almost guaranteed to get a BenQ drive.  And this is hackable correct?  This shows that 4/24 seems like when they started using the lite-on drive.  http://360drives.com/list?v_pack=4&v_v...mp;v_perpage=50

What do you think of this idea and how good of my chances of finding one made that long ago?
im thinking of just trying every store i can find.

Good luck finding a new system that old in your area. I guess it is possible but, around my area it is not.

I checked several stores yesterday and one of them had two Elites left one with LOT-NO. 812 and 816, both are almost 100% Benq. The 812 is now mine!
