I can confirm it has status 0x52 upon using dosflash.

I tried - benq unlock, dosflash16 & 32 and it didnt unlock it.

dvdkey did return the Inquiry and Identity though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

All the BenQ drives I have worked with have all three brand names on the label(Lite-On, BenQ and Philips).
In fact the label looks exactly the same as yours but I never paid any attention to the manufacture dates.

I was mistaken...after a second look they only have the phillips and benq brand names on them like typical VAD6038's. My bad.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Marijuana effects the memory (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif) ...but I love her! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/love.gif)

i think i have the same drive or a similar prob! OKay i open up this xbox Pro and see it is a BENQ, so i was thinking okay no Prob ive flashed tons of these no prob! So i get to the first step for the "dben 1234567 12345 and goes to the status part and it just stays @ "status 0x00" where it suppose to change to D1 and nothing! i tried over and over again and nothing? so do i have that same drive and have to have my drive sent out just like the "lite on" or wat? If anyone can help me out on this that would be great! Oh btw the drive was made in January 2008 and the model number is VAD6038 and the FW reads as the 64930c. btw the xbox has a Manufacturing date of 5-7-2008

I just bought an Arcade that was dated 4-28-08 and it came with a Benq with your same FW.  I had a bear of a time trying to read it until I decided to just keep the xbox powered up before turning the PC on.  It read fine and flashed fine.  Apparently the mobo wouldn't recognize the drive being plugged in unles it was powerd up from the beginning.

Lite-ons didn't show up until the April/May timeframe (mfr date)

Wow, 100,000 posts in this forum.

are you sure you have the same model no (see the picture at first page)
if you have a succefull dump then upload it to rapid share so we can use it with liteon see
what geremia said on the second page
"You can just try dosflash1.6 (preferibly on ms-dos) and see if it reads firmware.
If it goes to status 52, that fw has the new lock enabled, like the retail liteon.

If it dumps, it means that the new lock is disabled and i suggest to immediatly upload to rapidshare"

QUOTE(mp3boy @ Sep 27 2008, 09:39 PM) *

The drives I had in the thread linked had full size PCBs.

If it's from the same place I got mine, the lid means nothing - I think they've just been put together out of spares/refurbished parts.

Mp3boy: you appear to be correct.. the lid does not match the drive internals. The drive internals are early Lite-On and the Inquiry is returned as "PBDS    VAD6039-71931D", which is the model we were after.... But the lid says VAD6038, probably in an effort to flog it to and unsuspecting buyer

Unfortunately, that drive responds in exactly the same way as a Lite-On to all unlock attempts... It probably doesn't help that this drive is HK spare and not a full retail drive, as it has not been retail preped with a drive key etc... DVDkey32 returns all FF's... Benq_Un_lock has no effect etc.. both of these tools unlock a retail preped Benq...

The search continues.......

There has to be something less secure about teh VAD6039 as compared to the LiteOn.

Of course thats the assumption...

The serial port was intact... thats less secure surely?

Getting the drive to podger can do no harm and Charlesadams has a nice BenQ VAD6038 arriving at his door Wednesday morning.

Give it time, I tried all the above before even posting it to podger and he has not had it long.....Rome wasnt built in a day

Sorry to bring up such an old thread but did anybody ever get to the bottom of this one?

I have this exact same drive only mine is dead and I am looking to replace the pcb in it so that it can be used as an 0800 drive. It doesn't show any signs of power at all at the moment so I can't get any information from it but it does have the same pcb as the one here.

My question is should the replacement pcb be a benq pcb or a liteon pcb as it would seem as though this drive is technically neither one or the other although it is obviously closer to a liteon.

You will need to use a LiteOn PCB.

Damn, that's what I thought.

Shame really since people are selling old Benq PCB's really cheaply at the moment on Ebay but Liteon PCB's seem a lot more difficult to come by.

Thanks anyway Oggy.
