Set Mode-b From Windows
« Reply #90 on: January 26, 2009, 07:24:00 PM »

I type in the command in a DOS window and hit Enter. I see the little dots one after another. I then power on the Xbox 360 which always hangs the PC. I can't move the mouse until I turn off the power from the xbox. Am I doing something wrong?

I am trying to get a 78 into mode b through Slax 2.0, 2.1 and CK3 but all methods are not working for me. The Slax disc never displayed the "Now Spinning up disk" message and the CK3 hangs my computer everytime I power on the switch. I'm thinking this drive was spoofed. I'm not going the passkey method because that is out of my league. Any other thing I can try to get this thing into mode b.

hi all (yep, first post tongue.gif)

I have the 64bits Vista and can't get this working, because I can't install the portio driver.
Isn't there a 64bit version of the portio?
I really want to get my drive in Mode-B  biggrin.gif
I also tried using slax 2.1 but I keep getting the 'port to slow to respond' error.

this is what i have:
driver: hitachi 79FL
mobo: asus p5q
sata chipset: ICH10
os: vista 64 business ed.

driver is connected to the first sata socket on the mobo.

so.. could anybody help me? pl0x  happy.gif

Hello

This is my first post. Great work so far, but im hoping someone can help.

I am trying to get my H943 into Mobe B using mode_b.exe.  I have installed the portio32 driver in Windows XP and device manager shows it installed correctly. I have a VIA 3149 onboard SATA controller, which is set to IDE (non-RAID) mode in the BIOS.

I have tried the SLAX disc but got error messages stating "Failed to identify", and "SATA2 port is slow to respond", it then eventually loaded to a login screen, but the drive was not in mode-b.

I used Iprep101, as suggested in an earlier post to find out which port my hitachi is connected to.
According to Iprep the primary port is D880. I have a SATA HDD connected to my PC (running the OS), and that is connected to port 2/2, and the Hitachi is connected to port 1/2.

I used the command "mode_b.exe D880" and got the lines being drawn, i then turned on my 360 and got the message "done!".

I expected at this point to be able to see the Hitachi in device manager. I checked device manager and scanned for hardware changes, but the drive didnt appear anywhere. I restarted my computer, but there is no change. I have ejected the drive a number of times while in windows and theres no change. If i try to boot my computer with the hitachi connected and powered on the machine hangs and i have to turn the machine off, disconnect the drive and power back on. Does not having the drive powered on and connected during boot effect its visibility in Windows?

If i use the command "mode_b.exe D880" without anything connected to the port, the lines run slowly. When the Hitachi is connected the lines run quickly, and then i get "done", so i suspect the drive is being recognised.

It only takes one attempt to open the drive, suggesting that it is not in ModeB. Another thing i have not seen mentioned, is when i turn the Xbox on i get 4 red lights. Is this normal? is it because it doesnt detect the drive, or is there a problem with my 360? The 360 worked perfectly before dismantling it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for all your hard work, podger.

ModeB_16 worked on the first attempt for me! I just added it to the USB drive that I have for doing Samsung and Benq drives and it put a Hitachi 78 straight into ModeB!

However, personally I can't get ModeB.exe to work - it's giving me the error "Unable to start the IO.SYS service. Error code = 1275". This probably has something to do with the fact that I'm using Vista x64. If you know (or can devise) a way to fix this, please let me know. It would be useful for me because I wouldn't have to keep restarting my PC!
