Legacy (or combined/compatability) makes your SATA devices act like non-SATA devices for compatability with OS' or programs that can't handle SATA.
The option is usually in the BIOS under "drive configuration" "SATA mode", or something along those lines. You'll find it.
Note that using this feature will take away the advantages of using SATA (speed, etc), so you want to reset it to "native" or "enhanced" mode after you're done.
(When you turn on your computer, it says "Press (***) to enter Setup". Press whatever button it says to enter the BIOS settings. It's usually F2 or DEL.)

Slax 2.1 is a small linux distribution that you burn to a cd and can then boot into from the cd, without installing anything.
