Hello B-Wiener,
i am afraid to ask but do you let power on after you open the 360 drive?

I appreciate the help.  I understand your instructions but I just can't get the mode b message.  It just keeps going to the login screen.  You did this with the 8237 SATA chipset?  I tried your instructions many times and it just won't go into mode B.

Ignore the onscreen messages, when it takes 2 clicks of the eject button to open or close the tray then you know its in ModeB.

Also, I'd like to note that the PC's bios does know when the drive is connected and powered since it hangs for a bit when i do this. When I turn on the drive power right at the start of the slax boot the PC boots quicker since the bios didn't see the drive. Slax detects the 8237 Sata chipset but i don't think it's sees the drive.

I have noticed this too. If I boot up the pc with the drive connected and powered up, it hangs at the motherboard splash screen for a while.

Also, if the drive is picked up correctly, should I expect to see it in the bios? Or is it normal for it to not show in the bios?

I think I might go ahead and try and older version of slax tomorrow, see if that helps.

I asked you this already.... point 3 in post #2...

Have you disabled RAID on you controller in BIOS......

As you say the drive does not show in bios... then 2 things are wrong, you got unlucky and just got a marginal 79

OR
the chipset is in RAID mode and as such is ignoring Optical devices...

Do you have any other Sata Optical drive connected that you can see fine..

What do you mean by a marginal 79?

On occassion these drives refuse to work with particular chipsets.. Via IS usually the best..

Most modders have come accross these, for example most 47/59 won't work with my Via6421 no matter what you do, in this case I use a USB 2 SATA adapter, others use a Sil3112... Unfortunately, toolbox is picky and it won't work with USB and bricks drive with SIL3112....

If you can try your drive in a PC with an Nforce4 or Intel chipset ( non - Raid ), or buy a Via6421 PCI card ....... You have exhausted all options with your setup

Ive yet to come across a "marginal" 79 but ive had about three Hitachi78s that just wont play ball on my 8237
sometimes i switch them to the VIA6421 & they go ModeB fine, others wont work on either.

Had this problem with several Hiatchi47 drives too but they will safely flash on my SIL3114.

Marginal 78s & 79's cannot be flashed on SIL chipsets even though i can get them into ModeB easily as FWtoolbox isnt compatible with them.

Slax 2.1 will work with USB2SATA... except when the drive has been spoofed, but usually they drives are hack so it ain't an issue....

But if slax ( Linux ) won't see the 79 on your SATA I really doubt if Windows will.....

Well, i got into mode b using sata 2 usb and slax 2.1. Then proceeded to boot into windows and saw that the drive was detected up. I carried on with the process, inserted the unlock cd and played the wav then opened up 79unlock on e drive.........and it threw an error at me. Ive forgot what the error was but i think it was something to do with not being able to write to the drive. I still had a go at dumping the firmware, but it wouldnt have it. Firmware toolbox hung for a quite a while then popped up with a "cannot read from drive" message. Is there any particular reason that the drive cant be written to (with the 79unlock) when using sata to usb and can you suggest any solutions? Thanks!

I also attempted turning off the pc and moved the sata cable over to the sata port, but the drive still wasnt detected in windows.
