Flashing Original Firmware On A New Dvd Drive
« on: August 05, 2008, 06:27:00 PM »

Hi chapps..
Got a new TSH943A - MS28 DVD drive as the old ones knackered... Old one was flashed and I have the old drive key ( have 2 files dumped SAM-OFW.bin and SAM-CFW.bin and I thik! the OFW is the Original FirmWare as I managed tocheck the key string and it matches a wordpad doc I did of the drive key number at the time I flashed it but correct me if Im wrong!! )

Having read countless tutorials I cant find anything about just flashing your old original firmware back... They all seem to be about using ixtreme and thus it taking the modified firmware and flashing that etc...

Could anyone help with a simple way or a correct guide for just flashing my MS28 with my old firmware key ( whichever one it is! the OFW or CFW ! ) so then I have restored my 360 back to its old state and then I can procedd to flash as normal the iextreme 1.4

Last time I flashed it I think I used iprep but it was ages ago...

Regards again chapps!

If it is just the laser or motor, just swap the pcb

Thanks for the reply chapps...  however tried that and the xbox did the same thing that originally happened... the console resets itself during a game and then the dashboard says "opening" and you cant open the dvd drive... the laser on the drive doesnt move, its as though its totally dead...

Got the new drive yesterday, swapped the pcb, tried an game... fine for 5 minutes then the xbox reset and the dreive was dead again...

So swapped the pcb back so the drive was the whole complete new one and it works again fine however its not flashed with the original firmware so wont play any games at all...

Im tempted to just buy a new console but mine is only 6mths ( Microsoft seal ripped ) old and I have a new drive and my original drive key.. surley I can sort it!!

Help!!!

Yes you can sort.... get a hold of textbook tutorial... the section for Samsung will tell all

The only difference is that 1/2 way through the process you are going to change drives.....

Dump from the old one and flash the new one... And see as you have the orig.bin you can even avoid the first bit, but at least if you dump the old one, you will be 100% certain the key is right....

Cheers Buddy...

So do I just put my original firmware on an iPrep USB stick then and flash away..??  Doesnt iprep patch the firmware somehow with the MTK Flash jobbie.. if you know what I mean..??  Would this restore it back to its old state ready then for the iextreme flash..??

am i missing something or can you not just flash the new sammy with the CFW.bin that you have? theoretically putting it in the same state that your old sammy was in before it broke? not sure I can see any reason why you would want to flash original firmware on and then flash ixtreme firmware on? just makes the process longer? even if the CFW.bin is the wrong firmware you can then look at getting a dump from your old sammy at that point?

I see what your saying.. great if that the case but my worry is still the same...  Let me try to explain:

If I used the CFW.bin in iPrep (my old samsung hacked firmware)  and flashed using this will it not mix this firmware with the key already on the drive to give a wrong result... doesnt iPrep mix your original .bin file with the iextreme .bin to get the correct hacked firmware for your system..  see what I mean..??

The drive at the moment is not firmware keyed up with the xbox... or am I just talking crap and by simply flashing with my old hacked firmware with iPrep will it just work..??  I can do anything with the old drive by the way, its dead...

If I CAN use the old CFW.bin firmware, where do I put it..??  Do I just load iPrep and when you search for the firmware file do I just select my old CFW.bin already hacked file and just flash away with that...??  Is it irrelevant what is already on the drive...??  Just to clear up, the CFW.bin file is the original drive key firmware hacked with iextreme...

Sorry to sound like a noob but I assure you Im not, just maybe missing the point somewhere...

I see what you mean, but as far as I am aware (and it would be good if one of the more experienced guys could confirm this) flashing your new sammy with the cfw.bin that you have should just overright any firmware thats on there and make it exactly same as the old sammy thats broken. Even if it doesn't do this and as you say it gets mixed with the firmware thats on there and doesnt work you still have a backup of the cfw.bin and the DVDKey so it wouldnt be difficult to retrieve it!

Thanks chapps.. done it in the end!!  Heres how I did it in case anyone else wonders the same...

1. Loaded iPrep, browsed & added the latest 1.4 ixtreme Samsung firmware (8x Speed)
2. Choose the VIA Sata card
3. Prepared USB stick ( checked Patch MTK Flash & Format/Make Bootable)
4. Hooked up my old dead drive to the PC for no reason other than one last attempt before binning...
5. Booted PC from USB and into iPrep/DOS and amazingly it recognised the dead drive !!!!
6. Just decided to strat from scratch so used Textbook Tutorial 2008 edition and typed dSam 1234567 12345, hit enter then followed instructitons and did the 10 second trick
7. Original firmware was dumped successfully !!
8. Re-Booted PC & Xbox and typed fSam 1234567 12345, hit enter and followed instructions and did 10 second trick again and it flashed successfully !!  Switched XBOX off then PC.
9. Tested old dead drive and worked fine 100% playing ALL discs for over 2hrs... couldnt believe it
10. Plugged the newly purchased drive off ebay into 360 and went to DOS and repeated step 8 above (did not dump original firmware as it would be dumping the drive key for the XBOX it originally came from) using the same USB stick still plugged in and it too flashed successfully...
11. Tested and worked fine too playing ALL discs.. couldnt be happier!

Result: Old dead drive now un-dead ( a zombie??) and working fine flashed... Also new drive off ebay working fine & flashed... so, £30 spent for nowt on new drive although I have a fully working flashed spare now.. Doh!

Cheers for the help chapps!!  Hope this helps anyone in the future...
