Dump V79's (and Maybe 78's) Without A Disc In The Drive!
« Reply #15 on: August 14, 2008, 12:44:00 AM »

Slimgrip: The drive i was using is a 78 not a 79. As far as I was aware, unlocking a 78 is not required. It's not shown in any previous tutorials.

Podger: I was using an ICH7 chipset, The first dump I got was 192k in size but after attempting the dump again i get a 0k bin file. Any further dumps are also 0k until I restart the computer.

I have a new and working hitachi drive on its way to me anyway that I can swap the boards in, then I'll have another go at it. I'm just wondering if there were any drives that reported as 78's but required unlocking like 79's?

Nope I run linux mainly, but set up a small standard xp partition for flashing my drive and backing up wii games. The new drive should be arriving soon, so first of all I'll swap the board out and see if I can get the console working again as standard. Then I'll have a go at dumping the firmware again, if it does turn out to be a 79 masquerading as a 78, then at least I'll have a working drive to use your soft unlocker on. At the moment the drive doesnt read cd's, it doesn't spin up at all.

I'll report back whats going on. Another minor note, the drive does have the black epoxy on the sst chip that is present in the 79's. Is this normal (for a 78 i mean)

Ok, like I said I would I'm reporting back. The new drive arrived, I swapped boards and placed the new drive in the 360. Fired her up, popped a game in and bingo it all works again. So with a now known to be working drive I connected it to my desktop, put it into mode b with the slax disc. Windows found it fine and I was able to dump a valid firmware from it using fwtoolbox. So all is sorted for if the drive dies again.

Now I went and used podger's memdump79 to see if I could get a dump of the firmware and compare it with the one I dumped with the toolbox, but I got exactly the same problem as before. I dont get a valid dump, it just gives me errors.

So at least I have a working drive again, its just a shame this great tool doesn't seem to work on the 78.

If you can try to dump it with virus scanner disabled..... I think there might be an issue witht the way it writes out the file to disk

If I get a chance i'll fire it up and attempt the dump making sure all other programs are disabled, however I'm moving back to uni tomorrow and I don't see myself having much time to do this in the morning. Thank you though podger for all your help so far and the time you dedicate to the scene, it's very much appreciated, and if I cant get a dump done tomorrow, I might be able to in a weeks time.
