3 things to try....

1. try a new sata cable in case it's broken
2. if you are powering from the 360, make sure the chassis are joined, either by making them touch or better with some croc clips and wire....
3. check if the controller is in RAID mode, this could make incompatble with optixal drives....

I just did a 79fl on my VIA VT8237 chipset (onboard)

Ive had the odd few 78's give me the same problem your having in the past, wont go into modeB on the VIA 8237 but will on my SIL3114. Obviously not safe to flash on the SIL though.

Im sure ill probably encounter a few 79's give me the same issue & its a pain in the ass.

VIA chipsets and Hitachi's have always had issues.

Right from 0046's

Try a different version of Slax or a different SATA chipset.

I'd stick to Slax 2.1 as its what is tried and tested, but, another chipset is good but NOT an SIL chipset (they time out)

I found with my VIA in my old setup, I had to power some drives at the vmu linuzboot...........

Its the first or second line in Slax's boot process.

Hello All,
first of all sorry for my bad english.
i got the same chipset and here is my solution i hope it work`s also for you.
you have to use the tools from Prodgers Soft Unlock
1 connect your 360 drive to the pc.(use the internal power supply from the 360)
2 power on your 360 and open the dvd tray put in the wave disk from Prodger.
3 Start your pc with slax 2.1 wait for the message mode b tray to close the tray by hand (do not use the
the open/close button from the drive) if it will not close everything is ok push it till it`s closed then
use the drive button the drive will lock and the powerled will start flashing.
4 start your pc once your pc is started go to workplace and look for the drive with a wave sign
that is your 360 drive start the wave file and let it play till the end then start the file again and stop it
immediately open the tray take out the disk and use prodger`s soft unlock 79
5 take a dvd movie put it in the dvd drive and close the drive if the drive spit out the dvd push the
open/close button on the dvd drive a several time then let the drive time to read the disk if the powerled
from the 360 start to flashing again you can use  toolbox 4.60 to read the key and flash the 360 drive.
( it could be that you have to push the open/close button very often before the drive will keep the disk inside)

Good Luck

Thanks for the reply Germany but the problem is my drive won't go into mode B.  Slax doesn't seem to even detect it.  I'll have to try better timing with power button or get a different SATA chipset.

oops sorry, I never noticed that you mentioned to put the Wav disk in first before I even load Slax.  Did this really work for you?  I will try as soon as I can.  Thanks for the advice!!!

Feel free to try other revisions of Slax, it wouldnt be my first port of call though.

Everyone has different setups, and in no way is any suggestion listed above a bad one.

Hello b-wiener,
yes that work`s for me.
if i try it like everyone my 360 goes not in mode b.
power up the 360 open the tray put in the the wave disk do not close the tray start slax 2.1

jd

This might be a stupid question but if I don't close the tray then why do I even put the Wav disc in there?  How is this different from having no disk in the tray with the tray open?

Hello B-Wiener,
the difference is that you will loose the mode b ervery time you open the dvd tray from the 360
thats why you have to open close the drive so often when you put in the dvd to read the key after you have done the soft mod from podger.(so put in the wave disk in the beginning will save time and nerves)

Hello B-Wiener,
i will try to explain again.

1 connect the 360 to pc

2 turn on the 360 open the tray put in the wave file and don`t close the tray

3 start your pc with slax 2.1 wait for the massege mode b try to close the tray by hand(that you have to due
to check if the drive will go in mode b if the drive will not close when you push the tray it will be ok)

4 now close the tray by hand und press then the button on the 360 drive for open/close the tray it is now
loked the powerled on your 360 will start blinking.

5 start your pc, once started go to workplace the 360 drive will have the wave sign start the wave file and let
it play till the end start the file again and stop it directly now open the drive take out the disk and start
podger`s dos tool to unlock the drive.(when you open the drive you will see that the powerled will stop
blinking that will always happen when you open the drive you lost mode cool.gif

6 put in a dvd movie and close the tray you will see that disk will spit out because the drive has lost the
mode b now you have to open/close a several time the tray using the button from the 360 drive.
(if you open/closethe drive don`t give him time to read the disk due that a several time
i can`t explain why but that put my drive back in mode cool.gif

7  now use toolbox 4.6 the get key

( i am not a pro but i tried to flash the drive with several pc chipset`s nforce intel and always the 360 will not
go in mode b with slax only to let open the drive before starting slax will help maybe someone can confirm this)

sorry again for my bad english

I appreciate the help.  I understand your instructions but I just can't get the mode b message.  It just keeps going to the login screen.  You did this with the 8237 SATA chipset?  I tried your instructions many times and it just won't go into mode B.
