Are you going to command prompt and using the 79unlock app?

yup

here is what i've done...

boot from slax and get drive in mode B

reboot computer, leaving power to the drive on
(i've tried leaving the sata cable plugged in and plugging it in at windows boot screen.)
once in windows, i put in the unlock disc (takes 5-6 minutes, but it eventually pulls up.
play once, play and pause
close media player (tried vlc and wmp)
eject disc with 360 eject button
leave tray open
open cmd prompt and run 79unlock "x"...get the "done!" msg
close cmd prompt
insert DVD or orig. 360 game, wait for it to spin up
close out of "autoplay"
load up toolbox v4.8
click "tools" then direct drive dump then on raw dump button
always get the "cannot read drive" error.

i've flashed a 78 on this same rig before with no problem

Got it figured out...

I needed to update my via drivers (which I thought were up to date to begin with). Oh well, once that was done flashed in a matter of minutes.

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum.
I am seeking help regarding an issue I am struggling with.
I have read through this thread and haven't seen this problem reported so far.

My setup:
Hitachi 79FL
Xecuter Connectivity Kit
PC Motherboard: Asus P4S800D with 2 onboard SATA slots.
Slax CD 2.1

I have already flashed a few Hitachi drives like 46 and 47 models with this same setup.
But I have a problem trying to put the 79FL drive in Mode B using Slax.

I see that the drive is well recognized by the BIOS, during bootup I see:

Primary Master: HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR3120L
Secondary Master: < SATA device not found >

The Slax CD is booting but I can't get to "spinning up disc" point.

I keep getting the following sequence of errors/warnings:
"
Limiting speed to P1xx (xx are probably speed values and it's decreasing at each sequence)
Speed down requested but no transfer mode left
hard resetting port
........... ....  (ATA bus error)
"

I finally get the Linux prompt at the end.

Anyone seen this before?

I was thinking of a defect DVD drive but I've tried two 79FL and got the same symptoms.
I'm now thinking of getting the VIA 6421 PCI board, but since I've modded other Hitachi models before with this same exact setup, why would it be a SATA port issue?

Any feedbak appreciated.

I have ejected the disk before i do the command prompt

I am using a Usb-Sata cable, windows vista and the drive is powered by the 360.

But Cannot keep The Drive Shut

Not sure why you trying to keep the drive shut, it's not mandatory to have it closed.
Also there's no power light on the DVD drive when unmounted or.. which power led are you referring to?

I would suggest you follow the instructions in the youtube video I've pasted above.

PS: please use some punctuation in your wording, that will help us to understand what you are struggling to express.

Sorry hope this is better

turned on PC/Xbox360,
Put in Slax CD, Booted From Cd.
Pressed Eject on the xbox At the "Disk Spinning Up" Cmd, Slax Continued to load.
Removed Sata from Xbox ,Restarted PC and Reconected the Sata Cable
Opened and Closed the Drive on windows Start-Up (As Per Video).
Windows Detects Drive In Device Manager ( *J* Drive ).
Put In ( 79 Unlock Cd, "Burned With Imgburn @ x2 On Cd-r").
But the Drive Will Not Stay Closed ( Just Hear a noise from the xbox, Then Tray Ejects)
( Also Just Ejects with no cd in the drive aswell )

When I Close the tray Led On the Xbox just Under The Power Button Flashes then The Tray Opens

Hope This Is Better Thanks

OK, So I assume you are powering the DVD drive directly from the Xbox not the Xecuter kit (I used the Kit but that shouldn't make much difference). You don't have to unplug/plug the SATA cable while rebooting the PC, it worked without that step for me.

I have been through the thread again and noticed this post from darkrain which might be of interest:

I used a Slax 2.1 CD and a PCI Via sata card, one thing for people to remember that when you insert the 79 Cd and a DVD into the drive is to close the drive with the eject button pressing it twice and while the drive is closing to press eject again to stop the drive from ejecting the disk.

okay to clear up confusion from my last post.

@Fighterinthewind I know that you done your share of reading, so you're not a noob. The previous reply was actually aimed at the guy you were helping.

You can actually keep the drive 2 different ways.  you push the eject button 2 twice to get the sled closing, and then once more while it's closing.

So, you probably never knew that which is why you directed smith81 to that thread about pushing it 3 times.

For learning purposes that's called a symtom of mode-b.

Anyways, when you flashed your drive you probably just pushed the drive in manually, which works too.

Well, I don't really care whom that was addressed to but your posts are just useless. They bring nothing to the discussion but criticism, I would rather hold down If I were you. We've all been noobs one day and so were you. So please show some respect.

Having a problem after unlock. I've seen the video and done a few before (albeit, with a different motherboard at the time).

Have been able to put drive into modeb ok, boot into windows, put the unlock79 CD in and play the audio CD through once, then pause after the replay. Then, when i eject via the xbox (have also tried via xtractor360 adapter as well), it does nothing. If i turn on the TV i can see the display saying the try is 'opening...', but nothing ever happens. I've tried clicking eject a few times and get no response. I need to power off the drive to get any response from it again. Using a VIA 6421 card with updated drivers. But confused over why this would be happening.

Is this a common issue? wasnt able to find anything specific after searching for any answers.

Thanks.

Hi all, I was hoping to find my own answer, and after 2 days of pulling my hair out over this simple problem I'm giving in and posting a question in this ooold old thread.

My problem is much before most people seem to be running into issues.  My 79 drive refuses to read the WAV file (Yes it is in mode B ).  I use IMGBurn with CD-RW, and have burned many CD's all at different speeds...yes even at 2x.  The disc is easily read in my computers DVD drive, but when I pop it into my xbox, it tries to run it but nothing happens...and when I open my drive that is associated with my xbox it asks me to insert a disc.

Any form of help would be sooo much appreciated...my wife is going to kill me if I don't put our xbox back together soon.
