I'm a proud owner of the 79 Passkey for my Hitachi 79FK drive. I have yet to begin soldering trying to run thru the steps before making any mistakes. I never imagined the pads and modchip connector pins being so small. My solder iron tip appears small enough but I still have concerns.
Tutorials have stated to heat up each pad and immediately apply solder to it, then do the same for every pin on the FCC connector. Next press the connector to the pads and apply the iron to each connector to warm up the join and fuse both the solder on the pad and connector. If this is the correct way to install the FCC connector then my issue is with the size of the solder wire. It is about 1.5x as wide as a pad -- The Source was selling only this thickness of solder making me assume is standard. Trying to apply solder to the pad will inevitably bridge to other pads. Am i missing something?
Perhaps there is an easier approach to getting the passkey installed like connecting directly to the TSOP or scraping the FCC in favor of all wires?
Thanks for any tips.
