I used to use an nForce 680i based motherboard which I used to set Hitachi drives into ModeB. For some reason, my via pci card would not work for this.

I just recently upgraded to an Asus P5Q-E motherboard, and it appears that it will not work for setting Hitachi drives into ModeB. In fact, Slax is very particular about this board in general.

The only way I can get Slax to work without any problems is to set my SATA IDE settings as "Compatible" over "Enhanced," otherwise I tend to get a fatal error when it attempts to enable USB settings.

When I set it as Compatible, I will see Slax say something like "Found (Hitachi drive name, can't remember), setting into ModeB" but then it Slax seems to halt, like it's trying to load something it can't, and then after about 60 seconds, it'll proceed through the rest of the on-screen text, but it never does the "Spinning up disk."

I've tried using the Via card I have, and it still doesn't work.

I've also tried the ModeB in Windows technique, and I just get a Windows error report right away, so that doesn't work.

I cannot rely on the 2 wire trick, as I'll come across Hitachi 78's from time to time, and I just don't like to risk bricking a drive.

But, I need a solution. I'd rather not have to switch back to my old motherboard, but is that really my only option, or is there any possible way to get Slax working with this motherboard?

Bump. Is there any add on components that I can use for Hitachi's? I read in another post the SIL 3112 card mentioned... does this work with Hitachi's?

slax only works for me when I disable RAID in the bios. Then I will get spinning up disks as normal.Biostar A770 A2+ motherboard.

I either have to select RAID or IDE, and I choose IDE because I've heard similar reports of Slax not working with RAID set in the bios.

Still hoping to find a solution for this motherboard, since I like it much better than the other, and it supports Crossfire (for my new ATI) and the other one is nVidia based, so it's SLI instead :/.

Make sure you have the latest slax build... it's 2.1 BTW not 2.0 alpha 1..... Slax 2.1

2.1 works with almost all controllers

Sadly, I've tried both, and neither work.

Just read the MSinfo post again and noticed you use a Via.... The 47s just don't work with the Via card... If the marvell onboard is RAID only then that won't work either.... You'll have to get another SATA, I use a USB 2 SATA adapter....

I also copied the IDE portion of my MSInfo, and it says I have Intel® ICH10 Family 4 port Serial ATA Storage Controller 1 - 3A20.

In my bios, I have a section called Storage Configuration, where I can choose IDE, RAID, or Disabled. I figured that the Marvell is the controller used when I select RAID, and the Intel ICH10 is when I select IDE. I see previous versions of the Intel ICH chipsets being supported, but no mention of mine. If a SATA to USB may possibly work, I'll definiitely look into getting one.

And to fatc2k3, thanks for the suggestion. I gave it a try, but no go. I disabled my SATA, and booted Slax 2.1 off of a USB drive (I used a program to convert the 2.1 Slax ISO into a USB bootable format), but it still didn't work (it did, however, help me get past the point where Slax gives me the fatal error after trying to enable USB devices).

Have you tried using a connectivity kit? That may be an option to not having to swap back to your other motherboard. I use one for most of my drives and actually built it into my computer so that I dont have to open the computer every time I want to flash. Works like a charm for most hitachi drives.
Another option is trying a different SATA port on your existing motherboard. My ports and VIA SATA card each reject some drives regardless of model.

Do you have any virtual drives enabled in Windows?

Actually, I do have a connectivity kit, but the strangest thing. One day it randomly stopped working (mostly). I can still power drives with it, but neither the ModeB or Eject buttons work anymore. The ModeB button will change the LED from blue to red, but will not actually ModeB a drive anymore. I only used the thing like half a dozen times before it crapped out like that. Kinda PO'ed about it, just goes hand in hand with their RROD kit to show how Xecuter's level of quality went down the drain.

I do use Daemon tools, but I leave it disabled by default and only use it when mounting images. Why do you ask, how would that have affected anything? (I'm not asking that defensively, just curious?)

And finally, I would like to say thanks to Podger for his advice to get a SATA to USB adapter. Worked like a charm, I was able to ModeB a Hitachi 47 with it no problem. Will this work with all Hitachi's up to 78?

Edit: I just read the section of Textbook's guide, and he mentions that the 47-59 drives are the only ones that work with SATA to USB adapters, which I assume means no go for a 78. So that still leaves some consoles which I will not be able to flash. I suppose I can live with that, but it still kinda sucks.
