"dead" Hitachi 79, What To Do?
« on: June 06, 2008, 10:38:00 PM »

I really need to get a new drive to this 360 elite, but the original hitachi 79 died during the passkey installation and I don't have the original key. It does not open the tray, it does not read any disc, but does not give an error either, the xbox loads normally and goes to the dashboard without errors.

It is possible to access the drive to get the key somehow?

Using a programmer to read the ket directly from the epromm, witch model? Where to buy it? How to take the fw file from the chip?

Sorry for that many questions, but I am kinda desperate to save this xbox.

Thank you very much.

You can extract the key from the eeprom with a programmer. You'll need a TSOP32 adapter.

You  may find it cheaper to get someone else to do it for you, who already has the kit.

Take a scan of the board and post it here... There may be damage that you over looked.... Where are you???

I had the same problem once. I took the live from tp516 and when I took it off it took part of the trace with it. I realy should give up on these things and stick to softmods. I had no problems wirin a wasabi in me wii though it's just these passkeys (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)  too damn hard (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

This is what you need to read it. You might find it cheaper somewhere else.

hey just thought i'd let you know that NookularDeath can help you. he can recover your key so you can get a new drive and flash it with the new key. i think he charges like 25$ which is well worth it.

Yea, depending on the shipping price to send the board from here, it might worth. Not sure if I will use the programmer again in the future to worth the price.

Also if you get someone to read your dvd key with an external programmer, get him to put v78 firmware on it and then you can still use the drive without the passkey.

Or just unlock the 79 fw.

You really should post a scanned image of the pcb before you ship the board... Usually, the only issue is the ground pin, pin 24 isn't connected. That said you would probably get error 64 if that was the case..

@newfie4ever, you don't need to remove the flash to leave it readable. You can leave it readable post passkey quite easily...

yeah your in brazil right? so yeah shipping could get a little pricy but i think 25$ for the service and shipping back to you. so it would probably end up being 40$? he has my 79 right now to turn it into a 78 and he does the service and ships it back out same day.

Tbqh Id like to get the key, and I don't really care about getting the drive back, I have other drive here I can use on the xbox so it is not a big deal.
