78fk Won't Get Into Modeb
« on: February 03, 2020, 01:49:00 AM »

Hello eveyone,

Before popping into conclusions, this is not a standard 'getting into modeb question'. I flashed several 78FK drives, but this is the second one I cannot get it into modeb using Slax2.1

Yesterday I got this drive and connected it as always. Waited to boot Slax and turn on the drive... But the message 'Spinning up disc...' does not apear.

After lots of testing (boot order, different ports, delay on turn the drive on) I gave up.

The stangest thing is an exact copy of this drive  (same build date, july 2006)  goes into modeb right away.

Also the 'original' drive just works fine in the console.

Ik had this problem before. That drive I put in modeb using a 79KEY.
Before I do this again, I hope someone has a sollution.

Chipset: VT8237 (onboard) and VT6421A (PCI)

Thanx podger,

I will test when I get home.

Hopefully this works (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

When I understand correctly, spoofed drives cannot be set in modeb with Slax. So with an unmodded spoofed drive there is a problem.

Could this drive be spoofed by someone else ?? Or is M$ using different names?

There must be a difference between these drives.

Let you know if it worked.

I think spoofing is definately an issue with using Slax, stands to reason that you wouldn't want to send the HIT command to all your CD/DVD drives.

While doing a bit of snooping I came accross and artifact in /usr/src/ide-cd.c  on the slax cd. This is one of the files that Probutus modifies for the Slax CD... Basically if the device reports as "HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR3120L" then the hit command is sent else nothing...

CODE
if (!strcmp(drive->id->model, "HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR3120L"))
    {
        struct request_sense sense;
        /* the GDR3120L has to be enabled first*/
        printk("GDR3120L detected!->switching to ModeB thanks to kev.nu\n");
        init_cdrom_command(&cgc, cap, size, CGC_DATA_UNKNOWN);
memset(&cgc, 0, sizeof(cgc));
    cgc.cmd[0] = 0xE7; // Hitachi debug command 0xE7
    cgc.cmd[1] = 0x48; // 'H'
    cgc.cmd[2] = 0x49; // 'I'
    cgc.cmd[3] = 0x54; // 'T'
    cgc.cmd[4] = 0x30;
    cgc.cmd[5] = 0x90;
    cgc.cmd[6] = 0x90;
    cgc.cmd[7] = 0xD0;
    cgc.cmd[8] = 0x01;
    cgc.sense = &sense;
    cgc.data_direction = CGC_DATA_NONE;
    cgc.timeout = 15000;
          printk("sending cmd: 0xE7 0x48 0x49 0x54 0x30 0x90 0x90 0xD0 0x01\n");
        stat = ide_cdrom_packet(cdi, &cgc);
        printk("return_value:%d\n",stat);

    }

Very very stange!

As last resort I installed the Maximus 79Passkey... finaly the drive goes in modeb... drive is spinning (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

But when connecting it to the PC Windows hangs... damn.

On both the pc's (both VIA, VT8237 (onboard) and VT6421A (PCI)) Windows hang.

This drive is driving me crazy.

Did I mentionned I flashed several of these drives, including all other Hitachi's (also 79).

Any options?

So you put a passkey on a 78 and it put it in Mode-b, right???? Interesting....

 I reckon that the reason the pre 78 didn't work very well with the VIa 6421 is because the the SATA is terminated differently...... The 47 I have doesn't have series capicators on one of the Sata pairs, whereas my 79 has them on both.....
  So maybe there is a issue with the termination, have you tried other sata cables of different lengths...

Correct.

Indeed I uses different length cables.

The strangest of all is that another, exact same build, has no problems at all. And both drives work fine in the 360.

Should I try a promise controller? The only one left (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Just have to solder the passkey back on.

I think promise is one of the brands they warn you about..... Have you looked at the SATA connector on the the 78, could be damaged or loose or have a bad solder joint....

Are you joining the chassis of the Xbox to the PC.....
