Spoofing, Good Or Bad Idea?
« on: May 27, 2008, 03:47:00 PM »

I bricked my Hitachi 79 in Firmware Toolbox trying to update to iXtreme 1.4. When it displayed the sectors to flash, it said it had found a lot of sectors and I could risk getting my drive bricked(it showed like 20 or more sectors). None of the tutorials mentioned this warning and I had read so much already I didn't have patience and just clicked yes. This bricked my drive and it ain't coming back(doesn't eject, no spin, constant green light flashing with a red light at the bottom right, and E65 Error).

So I do have the keys and original FW and now I'd like to buy a Samsung MS25 and spoof it. I've heard it's supposed to be easier to flash, AND recoverable if you do a bad flash. But I've been told it's not a good idea to spoof across different brand names, and that I should stick to a Hitachi like a 47. I'd like to know if that's true, and if I get a Hitachi 47 whether it'll give me less trouble in the flashing process than a 79. I don't want another bricked drive. Can you recover from a bad flash with the Hitachi 47 as easy as you can with the Samsungs? Or should I just get a Samsung MS25 and spoof it?

What Sata card were you using for the 79... Some cause issues like the SIL 3112....

But certainly, spoofing should not be an issue at all... You can spoof a ms25 as a hitachi 79 no probs....

I have a 6421 card so I don't think there should be a problem. I went ahead and ordered the Sammy because I found another thread here where several people said it's fine. But I ran into the guy again who told me it wasn't a good idea and he told this time it's possible they can detect you on Xbox Live and that C4Eva himself had said the responses that the different branded drives make are different and detectable. Well, I don't know if it's true if he really said that but I guess I'll have to chance it.

Just to be safe I'd just get another Hitachi. Cross spoofing is easily detected and who knows if Microsoft will start banning for that one day.

M$ is spoofing drive themselves with refurbished units so that should not be a big problem.

Although I can't confirm to deny this, I'm almost sure that M$ isn't spoofing drives when they have full access to change dvd-rom keys on the motherboard. You show me a referb from M$ that has spoofed firmware and I'll eat my words.

Actually Ive been told by a reliaable source and a member on here that they received a BenQ iXtreme 1.1 spoofed as a Samsung.

He sent 2 away, received them both back, one was the above one was a lite-on
