Change A V79 To Different Hitachi?
« on: May 24, 2008, 01:36:00 AM »

I have a bad Hitachi v79 drive and I am wanting to know if I can put a different Hitachi drive in thier, like a 59 or 78.  If so do I just need to get the key off of it and put it in the new drive's firmware?  Any help would be appreciated.

when you said "bad" what do you mean? bad flash?

ya you can put any drive in there (Hitachi, Samsung or Benq) but you will have to flash the key from the 79 to the new drive and spoof.

I am not sure what has happened to it, but I can tell you that it gets an e64 error on startup.

E64, is bad flash no flash.... If it's been flashed then most likely, there is damage around the flash that has recently worsened to cause it to stop working.... Examine the area for dull or dry joints.... reflow them and test.. if you do get dry joints, use some flux to improve them.....

I don't have the key from it, but it look like someone attempted to remove the epoxy from the chip and went a little too far down into the board.  I haven't tried to get the key from it and don't honestly know how I can since there is no way to hook it up to a pc to get it, and I don't have one of those programmer things nor am I skilled enough to actually remove the chip.  If I were going to mod it, I would have just installed a mod chip since I am clueless on the other methods.  I can attempt to clean up the area and try to get proper connections back to the chip, but I highly doubt that will work becuase of the condition of the pcb.

What you use, a chainsaw??

Anyhow.. the only pin on that side that needs to be connected on that side is pin 24, the ground pin.

17 is the leftmost pin on that side, so the 8th one in from there, wire it to TP362.... if this doesn't work will need a better image... try using a flatbed scanner ar 600 dpi...

Obviously make sure there are no shorts..

I did not do this to the board.  I got it so that I could try to change the firmware myself since I have never done a v79 before, but much to my suprise this is what I found.  I was hoping that someone had just did a bad flash or modchip install, not chew the board up, lol.  Thanks for the info I'll give it a shot.

Unfortunately, these god dam passkeys have a lot to answer for... They are sold as if any one can do them like the old xbox mods but the pitch is just too fine for a noob without soldering experience and good equipment...

You'll probably get the board to boot, but putting on a passkey will be awkward to say the least, you'll have to solder wires to the pins and each one you add will get in the way of the next one...

@Grim187... I said, "Bad flash, no flash" forgive me for paraphrasing

Here's what the faq says.....

QUOTE
E64: DVD Drive Error.... DVD Timeout, Wrong firmware, dvd is without f/w chip, etc.

You must accept that most of the time problems with 79's are messed up passkey install related...

He was talking replacement from the get go so I was pretty certain he fell into this category.....  Call it intuition.....

I was going to try this but when I set my 20 gauge wire up next to the pins I did not feel comfortable soldering it, so I just decided against it.  I am not too bad at soldering and have done a few Wii's and a NME 2.0 chip before, but them legs on that chip are tiny and my soldering tip is not small enough for me to take the risk of damaging it any more than it already is.  Someone has already offered to get the key off of it in exchange for the drive and I have agreed.  I will just stick to what I am good at, which is not the Hitachi 79's, and order me another Hitachi, not 79, and spoof it.  I would love to learn how to do a 79, but I feel that I actually need to work with someone skilled at it first so that I can see how it is done.  What size soldering tip do you use for hitting those tiny little legs?

@captianmo81 > http://www.tcniso.net/Nav/Video/tcn_video2_tsop48.wmv , that's a tsop48 but its the same process for the tsop32's.

@podger ya there's alot of stuff in there that's wrong or just misleading, i see E64 that tells me there's a problem with the drive, nothing more. (number 3 in your sig)
