I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but thought it might be one of the more likely.

Anyways, I just fried a MS-28 board when I plugged in the power cable, and one of the pins (the upper right most one if you're looking at it from the back) got bent without me knowing. With my luck, I did not have a copy of the firmware.

So, I'm considering between finding someone to extract the DVD drive key, or just getting an external programmer, and figuring out how to do it on my own, since I work on a lot of 360's and accidents happen (eg. today I had the flu, and this guy insisted on coming at 10pm when I'm half asleep. If he had've just waited for tomorrow, this whole thing would never have happened).

So could anyone please give me an idea as to how difficult it would be to learn how to obtain the drive key in this fashion? I know that I'm probably seeming fairly incompetent by bricking the drive in the first place (believe me, I do feel dumb, but again this only happened because I was somewhat distracted and in a hurry), so some of you will probably discredit my ability based on that. I don't want to learn all the in's and out's of using an external programmer, etc, I just want to learn how to specifically to use one in this context. So, with that said, is it even remotely feasible? Are there any decent tutorials or resources that anyone could suggest?

Also, I do have a thread up in the B/S/T forum, but if any of you capable individuals want to PM me to let me know how much you charge for this service (preferably as close to Toronto, Canada as possible to save shipping costs), I'd be appreciative.

Hey shit happens

There's a whole section in Textbook's Tutorial on this.... See the Hitachi 79 section....

Also, if you are good at soldering, you could remove the flash from the fried board and solder it to a spare MS2x board and read it.... The flash usually survives the incorrect power hook up... Just dump the doner board first so that you can restore it when you need the it.....

Ahhh, yes, Textbook's guide. I forgot it was explained in there, yet I knew I had read how to somewhere, so thank you for directing me to that. I'm definitely not great at soldering, so the possibility of desoldering the chip and resoldering it to another board is almost certainly out, but I think I might be able to handle getting the chip off, and obtaining the key to insert into another drive board.

With that said, can anyone suggest to me a good Willem programmer (preferably one that's as cost effective as possible)? I found this link in another thread: http://www.sivava.com/EPROM_Programmer_4.html but I'm having a hard time figuring out which package is the right one. In Textbook's guide, he says you need a "14mm TSOP 32" adapter, and the first package has a 14mm TSOP 28 to DIP 28 adapter, but I don't know if that's what I need, and none of the other packages seem to be clearly what I need either.

I'm thinking I might just send this board off to a certain someone who contacted me on here to get this job done, while also ordering one of these to 'F' around with, so again, if anyone could please recommend me a good unit for this job, I'd be very appreciative.

Thanks for everything!

I got these 2 items, the first is for Hitachi's.... the 2nd is an adapter for a Samsung.... the 78/79 an samsungs use the same device but in a different package....

Willem + tsop32

Plcc 32

That said the Plcc on the samsung should be relatively easy to manage...

Are you sure you fried the board?? What are the symptoms?

Well, I literally smelt the board fry as it happened, and the 360 gives an E65 error when you boot it up with the drive plugged in.

Sounds like maybe the power connector was in the wrong way around

Yeah, I've read that before, but it was definitely the right way, but just one pin got bent, and therefore wasn't plugged in properly like the rest.
