The only way you can get it working is to use flash the DVD with a firmware that contains the original DVD key.... Find out form the guy if he did it himself or if he got someone to do it for him... Most modders would keep a reckon of the keys from the jobs they do just for their own reckords. Then if the customer does mess it up later they would be able to fix it up for them....

If it worked and then slowly stopped working then it could be as simple as replacing the laser.  I laser that is dirty or going bad will stop the drive from reading the sectors of the disc that show it is a 360 game and it will look like a DVD.  I would open it up clean the laser really good with a Qtip and Alcohol, then test it out.  I still recommend trying to read the flash and see what ver it is of the firmware and reflash to newer IX1.4,  Good Luck and it does sound like you got a great deal if your friend really didnt do anything to the firmware and it worked but stopped slowly.

that was no good i tried an xbox one game in it and it told me that i needed a hard drive which i dont have one but could the laser just be bad and is there a way to get the key off the mother board or put in a chip so i can use any drive in it so i can get another ts-h943 and if the board is bad just plug in the new one and go wild or a chip that will make the mother board not even look for the key

You can get the key, but its easier to get the same drive and swap the PCB's over.

Hang on, did you mean an original XBOX 1 game, if so the hard drive error is correct and the dvd would seem to have read it fine... Try a 360 original....

Dump the firmware using MTKFlash and open the resulting dump in Toolbox, this will display the key.
