Ahhh, thanks for giving me some hope TMF! =)

I was thinking the only way we were going to combat a read-only situation was to timing attack/KK/linux/dump dvd-key and inject into a 'modchip' that controls the drive. Not fun!
I agree that it is best to start calling this drive lite-on. Hence why I posted news with 'lite-on' and not 'benq'. They may be the same manufacturer now, but its still a new drive that specifies 'lite-on' and not 'benq'.

no iriez that wouldnt work. you cant run modified kingkong without the drive already being flashed. u should know that lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!

QUOTE(G0t M4xx 21 @ Apr 22 2008, 06:37 AM) *

just went and bought a new Arcade today, luckily it still had the old style flashable Benq drive  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

But yeah, no sense in tracking serial #'s until they start appearing in retail stores

Well as long as somebody figures out a way to read the dvd key from the drive I'm happy, then it can just be swapped for a hackable drive

so if im able to get the key off my drive i could put any other drive in there with my key and it would work???

Got two 360s back from repair center in Germany few days ago, they swapped drives on both but gave me the good old BenQs.
No LiteOns reported in Greece yet.

They put exopy on the benq, and it was no where near the SPI....

True, but combine with my first point and it doesn't leave many other places it could be. It's a VERY sparse board!

Actually you're both wrong.  There is this little thing called hotswapping.

Not only that, but if you want to go as far as doing the timing attack you most likely already have the DVD key if it's a swapped drive, and you can use a spare drive temporarily to completely crack the console. It's not going to go on XBL anymore anyway, and anyone doing the hack should have no problem doing the flashing. The key has to be in this new LiteOn drive, I guess eventually someone will find a way to dump it or get it from the desoldered MT IC. When retail boxes with this drive will appear it's going to be pretty annoying though.

personally this was already very annoying and i am quite miffed sure i may not be a model consumer lol but let me tell you i get plenty of 360's from people who want no part of flashing and just want their rented or store bought backups to work and i have seen soooo many drive issues from bad flashes to not reading discs bad updates etc to have such a problematic product then make it more infuriating with this key crap is horrible....with xbox 1 my drive stopped working ok np replcae it....this crap makes it pretty rough on average person to do that stuff....though i suppose many are just laser issues and you can replace just laser....

basically i hate how the key security makes everything so secure it makes self repair problematic that just blows!!!

p.s. thanx to all the scene coders who dev apps like fwtb 360 that allow us to overcome this....

textbook what are you on about? you cant hotswap and do something like that. Are you saying to hotswap with the original non-modded drive to a modded drive? Or hotswap an original disc to a modded disc with the non-modded drive?

whichever one, i am sure as i can be that it wont work

Well lets say that this is a write once chip.

It might be very expensive and a pain in the fucking ass but I still think it would be possible to hack.

I don't know anything, but I am presuming that if this is indeed a once write chip, it is like a CD-R, current drives are like CD-RWs.

If you can read the firmware somehow, then buy a blank CD-R (a blank Firmware chip) and then flash it with hacked info.

Of course, soldering, desoldering, buying a new chip...sounds like a bitch, but if worse comes to worse, I would say that these drives might be able to be hacked....

I'm guessing it's not a single flash chip, that would really cut down on the ability to recycle drives at the repair centers.  I'm sure it will be hacked, everyone said all the other drives were uncrackable, yet they were hacked.  Give it some time, if you have one of these drives, send it off to a good cause.  If anyone can find any specs on any of the chips, that would be good too.  Good luck guys, I'm sure you can crack this thing in no time (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

Signatures are only checked at bootup.  With the drive opened and just the spindle magnet in place, it's trivial to swap the original king kong disc with a backup kk xell disc.

textbook when you say trivial do you mean it's silly to do that or it would actually work do you mean that switch to kk xell disc it can bypass kernal that way?
