"disc Read Error" - Benq 12x Firmware....worth Trying The 8x
« on: April 07, 2008, 04:20:00 PM »

Hi there. I recently flashed me benq 360 to 12x, it was at 8x and didn't seem to have any problem reading my backups, admittedly the discs are pretty cheap but never had a problem with them before including my other 360 which has a Hitachi drive...

Anyways, recently a lot of my discs seem to have started getting disc read errors at certain points in games, for example...

FIFA 08 - Just before the main pitch loads after you press start from the "practice pitch" load screen, also in game during commentry for no particular reason.

Forza 2 - Game has problem loading tracks, seems to take a good 30-40 seconds to load most tracks, sometimes hangs forever or and sometimes get a disc read error.

The weird thing is that if I play a WMVHD rip of one of my HD DVDs, they always play error free without any problems at all, it just seems to be some games at certain points - even after a fresh burn and verify with a perfect read graph on my PC dvd drive.

I'm basically just wondering if I should flash back to 8x speed, and that maybe it could be cheap discs coupled with the 12x firmware I'm using and that possibly Benq drives aren't quite as good at reading backups than the old Hitachi\Samsung drives?

Many thanks for any help (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

No sympathy here.

Either use high grade discs or expect problems with reading either because of:

The discs being crap

OR

The laser wearing out quicker trying to read said discs.

I'm not asking for sympathy!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

I'm asking for an educated person to be kind enough to answer my question (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Did you even read what I posted, anyway...

Basically, I'm a little surprised as this benq 360 is only 3 months old and has hardly been used much at all. Wheras my Hitachi one has been going fine for ages. So is it just a case of me lowering the read speed to 8x do you think or will I need to use expensive discs etc, thanks for any help.

It's unrealistic to expect the drive the read any kind of crap disk....

The drive is designed for playing games off pressed disks.... I'd go so far as to say that they are specifically tuned and trimmed not play games off burned disks.... This has almost always been the case with the 360 and the previous xbox 1 that had serious issues with CDR's and would often work only with CDRW which have a higher surface contrast....

If your Hitachi played any kinda of crap disk then you got really luckly or the laser was tweaked unknowns to you..

Either way the only reccomendations you'll get here is to use Verbatim DL disks from the Singapore factory with MKM 001 dye....

oggy is correct you should be using high grade media

you could try putting the drive to 8x and see if it works its defo worth a try if the drive is only 3 months old i doubt if its dead, it has got a good chance that using cheap media has put strain on the drive so its weakend the laser so drop it down to 8x and get some good media and it might even work

just out of interest could you tell me what type of discs you were using i would be interested to find out

Thanks for the replies (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I'm using Aone 8x DL discs burnt at 2.4x\4x (doesn't seem to make a difference).

They are very cheap, about 35p each (about 70c\0.5euro), I've just ordered some 2.4x printable Verbatims so hopefully that will clear up the problem...

The thing I'm finding strange is that the discs ARE working fine, its just in certain parts of games that I'm getting the disc read error, no matter if I do a fresh burn or not, the discs read with a perfect arc in nero drive CD-DVD speed etc...

Guess the data thats being read with the disc read error could be near the layer break...

hmmm (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Sorry if my original reply didnt suit your needs.

I just thought Id get straight to the point, cheap discs are cheap for a reason, and they are the easiest thing to eliminate when testing any sign of disc read error.

When educated, helpful people sit on the forum day in day out answering the same Q's and offering very similar advice, we tend to avoid the crap and get straight to the point (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

As you have ordered Verbs, see if it cures your problems, if not, tweak the laser.

After that, If its possible, borrow a known working drive from someone (o you may have a spare?) inject your key and test that on your Verbs.

Cheap media brings all sorts of issues, especially with Hitachi's.
