I just got a 360 Premium and well mine has a Hitachi 79fl as well. I didn't know you could still use iXtreme 1.4. It says in the release info that it doesn't support 78/79. Is good to know it can be flashed with it since I heard is the best firmware out.

I also have been reading that once flashed the Hitachi drive doesn't read all media very well. And some reading errors may occur. There is a guide on how to boot games better posted here

As for your question I'm not sure but I'm wondering the same thing. I assume you left the cable connected so that you don't have to Open the case again to upgrade the firmware?

I would like to mod my Xbox now that I know it can be done. After successfully installing ixtreme 1.4 firmware. Will the chip need to be soldered again to get the drive to read/write or will it just need the cable connection?

You CANT flash the hitachi 79 with the Ixtreme 1.4 firmware released by C4E. He means that he flashed it with Maximus toolbox 4.6 which contains the Ixtreme 1.4 firmware. As for getting read errors just use higher quality media as the Hitachi drives have always been picky right from the start.

As I understand it once the drive is flashed, it stays in Mode B and so can be reflashed at any time without the use of the passkey. The passkey is needed ONLY to retrieve the drive key.

@MickRick

You are really wrong on this one.... A 79 will enter mode B will just Slax.... The passkey allows you to access the flash device, to read and write it, as a bonus it will put an unmobbed drive in mode B.... When the drive is modded it will enter mode B if you leave the tray open at power on....

that is true the drive wont read or write, you cant gain access unless you install the passkey correctly and put the drive in mode b the passkey does put it in mode b as a bonus..i will try to put the laser to 3.2 do you think thats a good sugestion any other suggestions??

Yeah, what I meant was, and again feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, is that once the passkey has been used to retrieve the key it can simply be left in place and does not need to be touched again. The drive can be reflashed using the normal methods.
