The general consensus says no. Why do you ask? Do you not like the samsung drives or are you just curious?

no its not that i dont like the samsung drives. im just going to reinstall my dvd drive on my xbox because the current drive is reading disc and since im gonna get a new 1 i wanna buy the best available. also the reason i keep creating new threads to get my answers is because in the hardware category after someone post to your thread once it takes it off the new and noone posts again, and i have never seen a board with so many members that you gotta wait a week for an answer.

if you can find a new philips drive those are even better than the samsungs (make sure its the new version though)

they read everything the samsung reads (cd-r included) and also read discs with the dvd+r bitsetting (which samsungs wont read)

But the Phillips costs 50 dollars less, why is that?

when you properly mod a 616t or f they will read originals

and of course any xbox stock drive (samsung 605, thomson or philips) will read originals

i think the reason the new philips is so much cheaper is cuz of demand, peopel want the samsungs cuz thats what everyone talks abpout reading cd-r, the new philips just hasnt gotten its name out on the market (so now is the tiem to buy, lol)

yeah i got one of those samsung 605s.  It reads cd-rs great. But wont read dvd+r at all and it wont even read some dvd-r's for me.  To tell you the truth I would rather have my thompson back cause it read all except cd-r.

FYI ... my modified 616t (flashed with 605 firmware) reads media slightly better than my stock 605, go figure!  i even swapped the laser between the two, it helped a little with the 605, but the 616 still was better for some reason.

gottimanu: how'd you get your samsung to read dvd+r media???  everyone i've talked to says it doesn't support dvd+r.  are you bitsetting or are you talking native?

can you bitset DVD-r media to DVD-rom as well???

if you can, wouldn't that make any disc you make a whole lot more compatible with everything???

How to tell if it's a "new" drive?

My old phillips drive reads dvd+r.  It reads everything but cd-r.
