Why not just use the 360 to power the drive?

using a connectivity kit is nothing new, i used one until flew sparks and blew.

also, the reason iPrep had the wrong port locations would be becuase you did not specify what card to use in iPrep

did you check in iPrep that it was indeed using the right port number?

the reason people say to use the connectivity kit on another PC may be either a: the connectivity kit V1 does not have an on/off switch, and b: may cause a grounding issue which might be why so many of them and blown up.

they seem to be low quality and if one of them dies during a flash, you can possibly brick your drive. using the 360 to power the drive is the best and safest method

there is no software method to flash a 79 drive due to a hardware limitation on the drive its self. i will be very surprised if there ever is a software method available

thats why any tutorial you will read says to use croc clips to ground the PC and xbox together. you dont even have to use croc clips. as long as the xbox chasis is touching the PC chasis then grounding is not an issue. the risk of that grounding to be an issue over a connectivity kit failing is significantly lower

if you boot a 360 with no sata cable attached, it boots to the dashboard. some xboxs can however throw an error. but that being a basis for a ban is not valid as it would mean than any console with a dead drive would be banned, and that any console sent in for repair may also be banned. so that theory does not hold any water and was dissmissed a long time ago

my two theoriess of why people say to use a 2nd PC where exactly that, theories. i have not seen a single post of someone reputable saying to use a 2nd PC, or even recommending to use the connectivity kit. its just an un needed spendage of money.

i would still prefer to use a xbox 360 as a power source any day

My PC is properly grounded.

I have flashed two Benqs with a Xeno Connectivity kit using the one power source.
I simply pull the molex power cable in/out as needed. I also flashed a few of sammys this way too.

The important thing is to not allow the kit to touch any metal on the PC because thats going to result in a fried drive.

I also have a 6421 card that iprep gets the port # wrong, its a simple matter of changing the batch files no biggy. I think its something to do with the card rather than iprep its a nasty cheap card.

I never flash with the drive in the 360 and none of us have had any trouble yet on Live.

You have the same setup as me. However the connectivity kit I use has an on/off switch!  

And I'm glad I'm not the only one that Iprep gives the wrong port number. You did the same as me and edited the batch files - simple. I don't know if it's the cheap 6421L card or Iprep, as I have an on-board VIA IDE and Iprep picked the 1st port on that!?!  

BTW, I have since connected the 360 to XBL and run originals on live, then disconnected from XBL, pulled out the network cable, re-booted and ran backups off-line. After that I reconnected the network cable, then reconnected to XBL and played originals on live again. No problems whatsoever!

doing that to test whether you are banned or not isnt going to tell you much. for a ban, you get flagged as running backups, and may or may not get banned in due time. it is not an instant ban

pulling the molex plug out of a running drive is very dangerous to both yourself, the drive and the PC. i would highly recommend that you find another option.

and yes, this tutorial is good for people experiencing the same problems

Isn't there any usb2sata adapter that we can flash ALL the xbox360 dvdrom drives exept hitachi f79 that need modchip.

usb2sata only works with older Hitachi drives I believe.  Power source works for all

I have been using almost the same method now for quite a while.  I have one of the connectivity kits that I won in a compo here about 18 months ago. I connect it to the drive using an external 12v molex psu connected to a switchable socket. I just turn the socket on and off as required. And I think it's perfectly plausible to expect M$ to collect data about console errors. How do you think it collates data for it's dash updates?

well i have two consoles that i have repeatidly flashed using the xbox 360 as a power supply since i got it a year and a half ago. if they were collecting data on this then i should already be banned, but im not. xbins live logs shows nothing to suggest that they are collecting this data, or that they have ever collected this data

having a drive disconnected will not produce an error code
