78k, Computer Won't Recognise Slax!
« on: February 25, 2008, 04:29:00 PM »

I've connected my 78k thru SATA cable to one of the two spare SATA parts I have in my PC. Then I put the Slax disk in my PC on startup, turn the 360 on and it still boots Windows XP. So I went into boot settings and saw that my other 2 SATA's (one being used by 360) were turned off. I turned one on and then it goes 'boot is unreadable' when I next booted the PC up. In the settings for RAID, it's currently on 'RAID ON' but would changing to 'auto-detect SATA' fix anything?

My chipset is:
Intel ICH8R/DO/DH SATA RAID Controller
SCSI/Raid Host Controller

Thanks!

First of all you have to go into your motherboards bios and set it to boot from CD, Once you do that turn raid off on your controller and set it to IDE mode and unplug all other sata connections.

Make sure you put the 360 drive in sata port 0 or 1 (however your board reports the first sata port).

Now boot your PC with the slax cd in your computer drive, your going to have to experiment when to turn on your 360 drive on in order for slax to pick it up. Follow the flashing for dummies document you can find at 360mods

Thanks for the fast responce! I'm going to try this when I get back tomorrow. I was just wondering, is my chipset fine to flash with then? I just want to know early so that I don't get disappointed if it doesn't work again tomorrow.

Well I'm about to do it now, I just have a real beginners question. If all the SATA ports are unplugged, and the 360 is put in the first SATA port - then after getting the 360 into mode B I need to re-boot back into Windows. Will I then have to plug in the other SATA cables again?

Yeah, dude I have the same problem! I followed the thing to make sure the Xbox 360 is in the first SATA port. Then does the harddrive and DVD drive go into the other 2 SATA ports? If I boot the slax disk with other SATA drives connected, will it damage them? And is an IDE drive required at all? I keep seeing it mentioned but I haven't got IDE in this computer.

yes just plug them into another port before you reset.

After 2 more days of trying, still no luck. This are the new different things I've tried now:
  1. Connected the 360 SATA in port 1, and disconnect all other SATA drives. When I loaded up computer with Slax it doesn't boot and lists out all the SATA drives that are empty.

  2. Put 360 in port 1 again, and the disk drive in port 2. When it picks up the drive it goes 'press F1 to continue'. Then the disk drive tries to load then comes up with the message 'No boot drive available'.

  3. Just the 360 plugged in SATA 0. It says 'No device detected. Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1. But I thought I'd still try this anyway.

  4. I took the hard drive SATA cable out port 1, and put it into port 2. Then plugged the 360 in the first SATA. When I loaded up the PC it said 'Selected boot device not available'. So as a test, I put a random disk into the 360 - restarted the computer and on the BIOs it picked up the name of my 360's disk drive. So the PC can't definitely see it, but the Slax disk isn't booting up so I can't do anything.

Alongside this, I have just the other things to note that may be affecting this. I don't have an option to boot from CD on start-up. I've looked all through the settings and I only have a boot from USB option. Although I think the way I can get around this is by using F12 on start-up - which puts me into the boot menu and I can choose between hard drive or CD/DVD drive. I don't have any IDE drives on this computer, and in the menus I have no options that refer to IDE. My RAID is still set to ON, but I haven't tried the 'RAID Autodetect/ATA' option yet thats also in the setup menu. But I heard that the RAID should be disabled through the device manager? The only other thing is that I'm using Slax 2 Alpha 1, the latest on the official site. Is there any different versions I should use instead?

Thanks

Hey I still can't get my 78k to connect either. I've read through all the tutorials and videos. That 'Textbook' video that people refer me to mentions nothing like unplugged different SATA cables in the video? All he does is restart and take the Slax out and everythings working alright. Also the PDF doesn't list details that I've heard other people say on here?

After reading what you wrote Kurt, I found my SATA in device manager. I'm not sure whether by disabling it, Slax will then work? Will I be able to to boot back into Windows OK with RAID off, I don't really get it's purpose? If any Xbox veterans could help us guys out that would be great! Many thanks! Could anyone recommend me then a new PCI card or chipset I could use that's guaranteed to work? I've had my 360 left open for about 2 weeks now, just sitting there (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

OK! If a controller is designed to be Raid and there is no way to turn that off in Bios then it is very-very likely that the controller does not support Optical drives.... If this is the case, Slax just won't work coz it can't see the DVD...
