what is the default speed without custom firmware? and which one is better? which one do you use for your benq?

12x is default.  I use 8x.  Use whatever you want.  Try multiple speeds until you find one that suits your fancy.

I like to keep it as "STOCK" as possible. So I use 12x. To each is their own though...

I know 12x will load games quicker but really if load times doesn't concern one are there anymore cons to slower speeds? Has anyone noticed any slowdowns during cut scenes or whatever with slower speeds?

I noticed stuttering at 8x on the intro for "Crash of the Titans" so I went back to 12x but it still stutters. The noise level on 12x is much higher and very annoying so I'm going back to 8x next time I open the box. It's amazing how much difference in noise there is between 8x and 12x !!!

You would most likely notice issues with slower speeds in games like Burnout Paradise, Test Drive Unlimited, Saints Row and other sandbox type games (GTA IV when it comes out). If you're driving along in TDU at high speed it occasionally seems to miss loading textures in time. But I haven't gone back to check this now that I'm on 12x.

I was also looking for some more detailed experiences but the search engine for this site is somewhat limited when it comes to short terms like "8x" and "12x"....or at least it was when I was looking for it ;-)

I'll kind of repeat what ewok said, but when i've played Test Drive with mine set to 5x it had issues where the textures wouldn't load and my car would fall in.  That's the only game that I really noticed any issues, and I played the hell out of Burnout Paradise and all the other sandbox games.

I'm actually changing mine to 12x to see if it resolves the TDU issues or if something else is amiss.

report back. I think when I open my box back up I will go 8x because 12x is extremely loud. I'd also say running 8x might not wear the drive out as fast.

Hey guys whats the update on this? I run at 8x and all fast moving games load textures slow. Does 12x remedy this?

I do all mine at 8X unless the customers requests otherwise.

In theory you should always restore before flashing.

As long as you have a valid copy of your original firmware you don't need to do this. Just put your orig.bin in the correct speed folder and click make ixtreme cmd and flash that to your drive.

The less flashing you do the less chances of something going wrong.

I actually use 5x. "Pre-Game" loads times are noticeably slower for COD4 and Madden 08...but actual in game...nothing to complain about.

O and quieter than a mouse...8x, a little louder, but faster load times...so you have to play around...
