"disc Unplayable: Clean Disc With Soft Cloth"
« on: February 06, 2008, 09:18:00 AM »

Ave,

Just flashed my BenQ drive to iXtreme1.41 yesterday. A lot of my older backups, ones I did a while ago, like Rainbow Six Vegas, MOH Airborne etcetra are giving "Disc Unplayable - Clean disc with soft cloth". These backups worked fine on my older XBOX 360 (MS25; iXtreme 1.4). I just got a brand new Elite with a BenQ drive.

The newer backups are not giving any problems - neither are originals - only the older backups are giving this problem.

Any clue why?

I think its a media issue... what brand did you use for the older backups..?

Same brand, same burner, same speed - everything exactly the same. There has been absolutely no change whatsoever in anything except the fact that now I'm running a BenQ with iXtreme1.41 - Earlier I was running a Toshiba-Samsung MS25 with iXtreme1.4

I use Verbatim Media, Pioneer DVR-111D Burner, and always burn at 2.4x

The only one thing that's coming to my mind - and I seriously hope this is not it - is that the older backups have a Disc Label on them. I've been using Disc Label's forever - and I've heard about this - that Disc Label's do hurt the media. I just never experienced it before. But I'm not sure if that's it. I do have a backup which isn't that long, 'DiRT', which does have a Disc Label, and it did work fine.

What speed iXtreme did you use. My Elite/Benq just didn't work at 12X, worked fineat 8X... Also, I have mine standing vertical, try your horizontal if it is vertical....

its the speed dude... i also have a benq and my mistake was that i put it at 8x (to make it quiter) and i also have labels on my disks and it gives me disk errors on some games... but when i flashed again and put it at 12x the problem went away i think the labels just make the cd hevyer and slows it down...

I don't know about the speed theory...I have used all speeds, but currently sitting at 5x with no problems whatsoever.

I have a feeling it's a speed issue too.

I did two of my backups, didn't put a disc label this time - both are working right now. If this problem persists, I might try a different speed. The only thing that concerns me is - if this truly were a Speed issue - why is it that Some backups are working and some are Not. They are all same media, burner, burn-speed.

Maybe the labels are off center and causing the disk to wobble in the drive and the drive laser can't keep up with it.. Depending on how accurate you are placing the labels may be effecting the amount of lateral movement on the disk, this might explain why some work and other don't....

FYI
I stopped using labels years ago coz i kept sticking them on badly even with a stomper, they wouldn't play properly in my DVD player at the time... I now use and epson R365 and printable verbs 43572, backups look very cool....

By any chance, did your drive pack it in

That is cool!
I really don't know, to be quite honest - cause it could be any of the causes you guys are suggesting. Labels, Speed ... I really don't know. The only thing I do know is, all my newer backups - Label or No Label - seem to be working fine - but all the older backups (All of them unfortunately do have a label, I don't have one without a label to test) ate giving the 'Disc Unplayable' at some point or another in the game.

Hang on, Have you checked them with XBC, schrom or mulleter to see if they are properly stealthed???? I was sure you said you had, but checking back it doesn't say it anywhere...

Absolutely 100% stealthed according to XDVDMulleter. Some of my backups failed the "SplitVid" test but passed all the others in XBC. I did patch the "SplitVid" and reburnt the two. However, I honestly don't think the SplitVid would be causing this problem.

So, did you get a failure in XBC, it's a Yes/No answer......

i flashed a friends Benq drive with iXtreme 1.41 at 12x speed. I also checked to see if it worked with a backup of bioshock with a label on it and worked fine. Try flashing your drive to the 12x iXtreme sounds to me its the speed causing the problems.

I did two reburns of my backups - Let me give 12x a shot and see what gives before I do anymore reburns of my older backups.

Thanks guys!

PS: I'm using Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4x Media, burnt at 2.4x, using Pioneer DVR-111D. Should I be changing any of this?

PSS: Is reflashing done exactly the same as flashing? I used the iPrep method described in Textbook.pdf, using a VIA 6421 SATA Card in my PC. Do I need to deviate at all from the original flashing method while reflashing to a different firmware?
