Flashchip Determines Firmware On Hitachi?
« on: January 22, 2008, 12:12:00 PM »

just wanted to do a survey if the 78/79 series drives all have the SST39VF020 chip
and the older models 32-59 all have the SST39SF020A.

I have successfully changed several 32-47 models into 59 models by using a
external programmer and virgin 59 firmware and then upgrading with iXtreme
1.4. The drives all show up as genuine 59 series drives and are not spoofed in
any way. and yes they do fully work with playing originals, backups, and movies.

I'm guessing I can change a 32-59 to a 78/79 series if I installed a SST39VF020
chip on them, flashed with virgin 78/79 firmware and then updated them with
iXtreme 1.4.

problem is I don't have any spare SST39VF020 chips laying around.. guess I
will have to order some..

oh well just dinking around with how the firmware works.. from what I can tell
all control boards on hitachi 3120L drives are the same, except for the flashchip.

I dont think the TSOP package revision on the board matters.

As far as i know, there are multiple PCB revisions for the Hitachi drive.  (I may be wrong on this next sentence, so someone correct if they know otherwise) Hitachi v40-59 is one revision.  V78s/79 have a different/new revision to the PCB.  That is why v40-59 firmware wont work with a v78/79 PCB or vice versa.

You should look here,

the 78/79 have a different controller

but they seem to be doing similar work to what you are doing...
