My Hitachi 47DJ is shot. I have to pray and lean the drive over on an angle to get it to read a burn these days.

I want to replace it.

(I do not want to bother replacing the laser because the drive has been acting up since the 360 fell off a table and I'm guessing theres a 50% chance a laser isnt going to help because anything could have been damaged)

I have the VIA SATA card which is considered most compatible.
I'm comfortable with the idea of spoofing new firmware for a different brand drive if I need to.

(the question)
What is the best drive to replace the Hitachi with?
What reads media most liberally?
(and whats best for any reason i didnt think of right now)

Seems like a consensus opinion that Samsungs read the most varied burned media.

Go for either a Samsung or a BenQ IMHO.

i've had both a ms25 and ms28, both gave array of troubles... pretty much non-verbatims were the issue, not to say all other media didn't work, Memorex was pretty decent... but the drives would over spin discs, or not properly stop, and i remember Ridata and Playo... those two were a waste, but with my latest Benq on 12x, no problems with any of the media... but that's my two cents... get a benq, it's as easy as a TS-H943 drive if you have a Nvidia or VIA SATA card...

I've had nothing but perfect results from my MS25 and MS28 drives. I can't recommend against them... across any brand of media. They're the best supported and easiest to flash imo.
