Do I Need A Via S-ata Controller?
« on: January 16, 2008, 12:44:00 PM »

I'm going to flash a new xbox 360 arcade with BenQ dvd-drive, but I wonder if I need to have a VIA S-ATA controller? I used my ASRock Dual SATA2 to flash a hitachi v78 and that worked flawlessly. If not I have to order a VIA VT6421A, but I rather not if I don't have to (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Thanks. Quick response will get you an e-biscuit (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pop.gif)

not that quick, but here we go (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

To flash a benq WITHOUT soldering a switch, you need VIA or NFORCE chipset. i don't know what chipset is on the asrock board, but if it has one of the two i just mentioned you don't need another pci card

Right, so a nforce 4 mobo would work perfectly? Bummer I just sold my old nforce 4 mobo, but I reckon I can get a hold of a asus a8n32 sli deluxe with nforce 4 chipset. That would be alright then?

bump... Do I have to do anything different using a nforce 4 motherboard? Or would I do the exact same thing as if I used a vie sata controller? Has anyone done it using nforce 4 who could tell me? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Thanks. E-biscuit for both of you! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Just to make sure before I start: Could someone give me a link to an updated tutorial on how to flash my BenQ drive with nforce4 chipset? I don't want to brick it... How should I go about making a backup of the original firmware in case something goes wrong?

Are you talking about ASRock Dual SATA2? Or ASUS a8n32-sli deluxe or any random nforce4 chipset motherboard?

Right, I've read through it. The only thing is that I can't ever see the guide mentioning anything about safety backup. When I flashed a hitachi drive I saved multiple backups of the original firmware on my computer, but I can't seem to find anything like that with the BenQ drive (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif)

Could someone "reassure" me about this one? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Not sure what you are saying about the Benq...

However, when you use iPrep to flash the Benq, the first thing you do is read the flash and the operation saves this to the floppy of Usb stick in the backup folder, the next thing it does is extract the key and insert it into the iXtreme firmware..... the orig is stored on the floppy/usb stick in the backup folder.

Copy it from there and do whatever you need to do the preserve it.....

Thanks, that cleared things up. I didn't realize it saved a backup automatically on the memory stick. Once the backup is saved on the memory stick, how can I read the key from the original backup firmware in windows? Sorry for all the questions, but I like to be sure (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)
