Fw Speeds (12x, 5x, Etc) And Dvd Life
« on: January 05, 2008, 05:36:00 PM »

Hey guys, i was hoping some more experienced people would be able to weigh in on this topic.

Basically my #1 question is, can using a slower speed HURT your dvd drive? It would seem to me that the slower you go, the better in terms of drive longevity. However, i know the stock speed is 12x so i was wondering if perhaps running at a speed it wasn't designed for could have bad consequences.

FWIW, i have run 5x and 12x on my benq, and am considering going back to 5 due to the noise - load times are not an issue for me. Before i do so though, i wanted to hear what the community has to say about speeds:

1) what speed do you run? (and drive)
2) what issues do you have with that speed? (include media type if they are loading issues)
3) why did you choose that speed in the first place?

Thanks in advance guys, looking forward to gettin some info before i choose a speed for my 1.41 reflash

BenQ Vad6038 8x

No problems with Verbatim DVD+R DL

To reduce the noise and get normal loading times.

The speed of the drive doesn't change the lifetime. On 12x the spindle motor has to work harder but the laser will fail way before it. Yes, it'll fail some day and there's nothing you can do about it. So just run at the speed you like and where videos don't get choppy (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I have used the following speeds and drives:

Hitachi 59 - 8x, an in between speed that is farmore efficient than 12, 2, 5 = Doesn't like to play Memorex

Samsung H943ms25 - 12x ideal speed for this drive for it reads most media, not too loud = Plays Memorex

Samsung ms28 - 8x for 12x was a bit louder than that of the ms 25 = Doesn't like Memorex too much

I have a Benq Vad6038 with Ixtreme 1.4 x5 . Makes a lot of seeking noises playing backup games. No seeking noises with original game.
Pioneer 112d 1.24 firmware + Verbatim +DL burned 2.4x.

Will be going to Ixtreme 1.41 soon. Hope it fixes the seeking noises.
