'DosFlash compatible only' appears in iPrep when the SATA controller you select is, well, DosFlash compatible only i.e. not compatible with MTKFlash. If you have your VIA controller selected you should not be seeing this as it is compatible with both.

In your previous post you mention your "6421 pcmia" card - I assume you mean PCI card? Or are you trying to flash from a laptop with a PCMCIA card? Either way, that is the controller you need to select in iPrep, not your "ATA channel 0" controller. It is normal to see Windows recognise the VIA 6421 as a 3249, so don't be concerned.

Run iPrep again, this time select the VIA 6421 (3249) as your controller. When you reboot your PC, disable ALL IDE and SATA drives in BIOS or physically unplug them. This will give you the best chance of getting it to work.

OK THIS IS MY LAST CHANCE TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM BEFORE I COMMIT SUICIDE BY EATING MY OWN HEAD

I AM USING A ACER ASPRIE LAPTOP 5633WLMI WINDOWS VISTA HOME PREMIUM

A VIA 6241 PCMIA CARD (WHICH SHOWS UP IN DEVICE MANAGER AND IPREP AS VIA 3249)

I HAVE PREPPED A USB STICK WITH IPREP AND AND BOOTED INTO DOS SO FAR SO GOOD

WHEN PROMTED "MTK VENDOR INTRO FAILED ON PORT 0XFD30 PRESS YES  ETC ETC I GET A STATIC 0XFF TURN XBOX ON AND OFF ETC (NOTHING).

THEN TRIED IPREP USING  "SWITCH TO IDE BASED CONTROLLERS"

ATA CHANNEL 0, WITH THIS I GET ALL THE ABOVE EXCEPT THE NUMBERS 0X51 AND 0XD1 FLASHING ONE AFTER THE OTHER,(AGAIN SWITCH XBOX ON/OFF.....NOTHING)

NEXT USED ATA1 I GET A STATIC 0XD0.................. NOTHING

FINALLY USED "INTEL®82801GBM/GHM(ICH7-M FAMILY) SERIAL ATA STORAGE"
AND I GET A STATIC 0X80 AND ...............................NOTHING

SORRY FOR THE LONG THREAD BUT THIS IS TRULY DRIVING ME INSANE SO IF ANYONE CAN HELP AND POSSIBLY SAVE THE LIFE OF ANOTHER FELLOW BEING I WOULD APPRECIATE IT  blink.gif

SORRY FORGOT TO MENTION IF YOU DID NOT ALLREADY KNOW, THE ATA0, ATA1 AND INTEL OPTIONS ALL HAVE THE SIGN DOSFLASH COMPATIBLE ONLY, NOT SURE IF THIS MATTERS OR NOT

PS: I HAVE FOLLOWED THE TEXTBOOK GUIDE. (OBVIOUSLY NOT VERY WELL)

First, please don't use all caps - I know you're frustrated but that's just bad form.

Second, ONLY VIA and nForce can be used to flash a BenQ, doesn't matter that iPrep says your other controllers are DosFlash compatible.

Have you tried using DosFlash32 in Windows or are you just using DosFlash16 in DOS? You might have better luck in Windows, since you're using a PCMCIA card.

Are you disabling all your hard drives and CD/DVD-ROMs in BIOS? Have you tried using all the ports on the VIA card? It needs to be the first port (0 or 1) to work.

The only other suggestion I can make is to use iPrep to create the files on your C: drive, then open a DOS prompt in Windows (Start->Run->cmd [enter]) and try it from there. I read another post on this forum where someone used a laptop with a PCMCIA card in this fashion, but to flash a Hitachi drive. Click here to read.

Unfortunately, very few people have tried using a laptop to flash their Xbox drive so there is not a great deal of information out there. If you have tried EVERYTHING you can and still have no success, you may just have to accept that it is not going to work with your particular setup and find someone with a desktop PC to flash it for you.

Hey dude wassup I didn't read all the topic post but here's some advice if your willing to try anything:

1: try all PCI slots on your pc and both (or more) of the possbile ports on the actual card itself

2: don't check "Patch MTKflash" in iPrep.  This is sometimes unnecessary and may make it work

3: most importantly.  most via and sata cards don't support VISTA yet.  You say your using Vista.  Check to see if your card supports VISTA. Seeing as how this is a unique problem, that might be the unique answer.  If ever possible, to use a friends computer or some other pc/lappy for whatever you have.

And If worse comes to worse and you realize the problem or even if you don't, just buy a new card and find a new computer if that could be possible. (I know i only have one pc, but maybe you can find another)

Also I can't flash mine either because the drive never shows up in iPrep as well.  I feel for ya

Thanks for your advise mate. Have tried all the above suggestions and then some. I checked msinfo32 it showed up as port fd30 via raid controller vt6421.
iprep showed via 6421.
booted into dos pressed y, typed dben ******* *****,  it then showed mtkflash failed on port fd30 press yes to keep sending. all i got was ox7ff no joy.
I guess i will just wait until i can try another pc   blink.gif

RESPECT TO ALL ON THIS FORUM, A DEFINITE  WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND SUPPORT.

Hey Johnny have you tried "textbook's" tutorial?  There is a great wealth of information on flashing that drive as well.  Check out 360mods.net and retrieve the document.

hello there yes i have tried the tutorial that has been my bible so to speak. It is strange for all intents and purposes every thing seems to be correct but when it comes to the read. it just hangs at 0x7ff.
It is a laptop that i am using so i just guess there is something about it that will not let me read/erase/flash.
The card shows up fine in msinfo32 and iprep and also in dos.
one thing i did look at was dosflash32 and when i ran it i could see the port in the drop down menu but it said "no atapi device present" dont know if this means anything.
