Need Immediate Help - Hitachi Issues
« on: December 07, 2007, 03:36:00 PM »

Hey guys,

I need some advice here from the pros.

first question which is the main, does the vt 6421 raid controllers work with these drives?

I'm doing my first hitachi-lg mod.  I firs had issues getting it in to mode b.  I tried the slax method and it did not work with this err:

disk error 32
at=4280
drive 9f

boot failed.

So I used the resistor method and I got it in to mode b.  I booted up windows (froze for like 10 mins) I did all of the suggested steps of ejecting the drive multiple times, etc but the drive wont recognize in windows.

i looked up my vt 6421 card and it states "unable to start"  I reinstalled the drivers and everything, same issue.  I tried both slots on the card, same.  I powered down the 360 and unhooked the connection and the card started w/o any issues.

Any ideas on whats going on or advise would be great, this is driving me crazy

thx

first of all, what hitachi drive are we talking about? v47 59 78 79 ....

second, try what JTimp716 said,
that won't work since the drive isn't in Mode B anymore after turning it on (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

try opening the tray while windows is booting (this should require 2 presses)

if that doesn't work, then after you've put it in Mode B with slax, unplug the sata cord, restart the pc and insert the sata cord right after the windows splash screen pops up. KEEP THE DRIVE TURNED ON!

I've had a lot of issues with a 47 once, my solution was to flash it with my internal sata port (intel chipset)

I have flashed almost all version of hitachi, samsung & benQ. I own a VT6421 for samsung/benq drives and a Sill3112 (Silicon Image) for hitachi drives. I had a problem flashing any hitachi with my 6421 card but it worked 50% of the time (only plugged into port 2 and ejected while booting windows) another trick that worked for me (once) was when you boot into windows disable the card, then unplug the sata cable and enable the card then immediately plug the sata cable in while the card is enabling. This sometimes works. Other than that I use my silicon image card for hitachi's and it works 100% of the time. You could get this card for under 20 bucks at your local computer store.

True, there are more ways to get hitachi's working, but it seems his 'immediate' help isn't that urgent since it's been 4hrs ago already

The VIA card did not work for me with the Hitachi. I had tons of problems. I went and got a SIL 3112 and still had problems on my computers where I had a Sata HD booting Windows. I used a spare PC with an IDE HD booting Windows and the SIL 3112 and it worked perfectly.

thanks alot guys

I actually figured it out.  The drive kept disabling my via card when booting into windows with the 360 on and in modeb.  So I booted to windows, THEN I turned the 360 on (connected to the pc) put it in mode b with the resistor trick and enabled my card.  This method worked (I followed other instructions from a few tutorials)

So all is well but does anyone know why the slax method wouldn't work? Anyone else have problems with the slax cd using the 6421 card?

Thanks a lot (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
