You have to use a pass key. No way around it yet.

You have to use a pass key. No way around it yet.

I have the 79FL drive in my XBOX 360.  I have the 79 Passkey installed and used SLAX to get it to show up on my computer.  The computer reads and names the XBOX drive just fine.  I put an original XBOX 360 game into the 360 and pressed eject twice so that the drive door would stay closed.  I am using toolbox 4.6 to attempt to dump the fw.  Everytime I click on "RAW dump firmware as" I get an error after a minute that "cannot read from drive".  I can't dump the firmware and therefore I can not flash it either.  Can someone please help me?

Is the blue light coming on the passkey when you power up the drive ?

You really should not need slax, i have never done anything but install passkey and flash.

Use a ohm meter and test every connection for continuity.

Thanks for your replies.  The blue light does come on when I power up the drive, and it goes off after two seconds as it should.  I know that the 360 is in mode B also, because of the fact that the drive door remains open unless I click eject twice.  The chip was installed by a professional who does work on avionic components for the military, so I highly doubt that there are any continuity issues.  As far as SLAX goes, I had to use SLAX in order to get my computer to even recognize the 360's drive.  Without SLAX, the 360's drive would not show up in my computer or in the device manager.  Is it possible that my SATA chipset is not compatible?  I have IntelĀ® ICH8 2 port and 4 port SATA controllers.  I am not a computer genius, and so I hope this information helps anyone who will try to help me.  Thank you.

bad install is all check your install if oct or nov drive have windows running and have a disc already inside the 360. hook drive to 360 and start powering on and off the 360 until blue light comes on if drive doesnt show up in eveice manager very easy scan for plug and play devices will make it show up. after that flash awat if this still gives you an error 100% bad install of chip

The installation of the 79passkey is flawless.  It has been checked and rechecked by a professional.  The install date for the XBOX 360's DVD drive is June of 2007, so should I still try to turn it off and on while connected to the PC in an attempt to get the PC to read the 360's drive, without using SLAX?

If you are 100% sure the install is good and it is still not working then you probably have a bad chip.

BUT, I can tell you after doing 40+ of these passkey installs I have yet to come across a bad chip.

Ranger, no disrespect intended.  I am at a loss here.  I do not understand why my computer will read the 360's drive when I use SLAX, but if I do not use SLAX my computer will not read the 360's drive for nothing.  I have tried to scan for plug and play devices to no avail.  The only way that I can get my computer to read the 360 is with SLAX.  But when I used SLAX, even though the computer recognized the 360's drive, it would not allow me to dump the firmware and it gave me an error "can not read from drive".  Unfortunately, I do not have an ohm meter to test the continuity of the passkey.  I assume that it is properly installed because the blue light comes on and goes off after two seconds and it is obvious that the 360 is in mode B, which is what the 79passkey is intended for.  Can you please tell me what I should do next?  If need be, I will have the continuity tested AGAIN.  I find it hard to beleive that it could be a bad chip also, as you stated.  I also find it hard to beleive that a professional electronics installer who works for the military could have improperly installed the chip.  Personally, I think that it is some other problem, but I have no idea what.  If you don't mind, I would like to know what you would charge to take a look at it yourself and where you are located in the case that I would send it to you.  Thank You for your time.

Wrong. The passkey is not intended to put the drive into mode b. It can and often does put it into mode b but that is not what its purpose is. The 79 drive will go into mode b without any passkey chip installed. The main purpose of the passkey is to allow the firmware to be read and flash too.

Anyone can put any 79 drive without a passkey installed into mode b and read disks from Windows. But without a proper working Passkey it will never let you read and wright to the flash.

So we come back to the same thing. It is ether a bad chip install or a bad chip.

I stand corrected.  Thank you.  I believe that you are correct now too.  What is your preferred method of contact so that I might procure your professional services?

guys , i had the same problem

i switched to the  shortest sata cable that i had( the xbox original) and it worked...give it a try

Are you saying that you were able to read/write the firmware of a Hitachi rom ver 79fk or 79fl WITHOUT using any solder mod?  blink.gif

Think I'll give this a try! It's just about the only thing that I havn't tried so far.

BTW, what SATA chipset did you use to hook up the drive to PC and what method did you use to power the drive?

The more info you can give, the better.  smile.gif
