I believe my current drive is a Hitachi FL79, I've not opened up my 360 yet, but my warranty has just expired and my drive sometimes won’t eject so I'm thinking of replacing and for this 'quiet' drive. Is it possible?

I have in the past flashed keys for the 360 but only to drives of the same brand.

Would I require a different progress to flash the drives? than before where they we're both Hitachi's?

You will need to dump the original firmware from your v79, which requires a 'passkey'.  So, once you dump it, simply use the orig.bin you get (decrypted version) with the 'Make iXtreme Firmware' command in the BenQ iXtreme firmware pack.  This will create a BenQ firmware with your hitachi key and hitachi version strings.  Just flash the created firmware and you're good to go.

Are the pieces of software I need easy to locate?

The software is readily available from Xbins.  I would be more concerned about ordering and soldering in a 'passkey' type device to enable reading/writing of your v79.  That is the first big step - the rest is easy.

Right,

Ideally what drive do I want to have in my 360 to make it easy?

Anything but a v79 can be done by software.

If it's out of warranty and you don't want to pay MS to fix the drive, then crack it open - it's the only sure way of knowing what you're running.
