Just making sure that no one gets confused with the following posts:

I've never had to put my MS28 into 0800 mode (I use the badflash method) - can someone else advise here?

QUOTE(DMageXBE @ Nov 13 2007, 02:27 PM) *

You can flash directly to 1.3. Just be sure to enable 0800.

If your TS-H943 (Toshiba-Samsung) was originaly a MS25 then you require the Enable 0800 Disc.

If your TS-H943 (Toshiba-Samsung) was originaly a MS28 then you require the Badflash (10 second) method.

I do hope that was a joke dear boy!

Well I have a box that was banned and then later updated to Ixtreme so none of my old backups work. I can go back and revert the firmware but since I no longer use the box online it'd be nice to have firmware that boots this without having to go to pre-ixtreme firmware.

However... you CAN use the badflash method on MS25's too.  I have flashed about a dozen 360's now, and a small number of them were Hitachi's.  With the Hitachi's you must put the drive into 0800 write mode using the Slax boot disc.  But for Sammy's (21's/25's/28's) you can always use the bad flash method.

Just a note on that too...  I generally find it is not necessary to wait for 10 seconds.  I usually have to run MTKFLASH twice for it to detect the connected SATA port.  Once done I power off the 360.  Hit the number corresponding to the controller, then within a few seconds I power on again.  I use this for both backing up (R switch) and flashing (W switch) the hacked firmware.  The tutorials will say 10 seconds, because not all SATA controllers behave the same.... so its just a rule of thumb - and one should experiment with what works best for you and your gear.

I see a lot of comments on the speed versus quiet issues.  Personally I've always used the fastest one available (12x).  And for me I've had no problems, and sure it can be a little noisy at times.  But for most of my mates - the biggest issue has been whether it works with their media or not.  Lately I've been buying cheap media made by Ricoh (under the "Laser" brand).  It all works fine for me, but not so for everyone else.  Under these circumstances, dropping the read speed can help.  Personally, I'll probably start flashing everyone with the 8x from now on, even though 60-70% have no issues with the 12x.  But it just reduces that margin a little bit more  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Oh I've also just updated to 1.3a 12x and all good so far.

after i flashed my profile will not stay signed in. dashboard will sign me but not connect to live. then i sign in to live, try to do anything(check msg, view anything related to profile) and freezes up.

turn off start over. manually try to sign in.. signed in and out at the same time. back to sign in.

WTF

got it. flashed back to 1.2c. still was a little screwed up but got to work. then signed out of xbl.
reflashed with 1.3 x8 and all is good.

i would recommend you sign out of xbox live on your console before flashing

oh.. just a small edit to my post above.  The tutorials refer to the Hitachi's switching to "ModeB" (specifically so that Windows detects the drive and you can then use the firmware toolbox etc).  Just trying to preempt any confusion I might have created... my bad  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

But as for the bad flash method I stand by what I said that you CAN use it for all sammy's..  even if simpler methods might work on pre-MS28's.

for those of you who used iPrep to flash this firmware...
how did you do it?
did you guys used iflashed command after booting? (without "iDump"ing)
or used iDump command and then used iFlash?

the available read speeds are 2x, 5x, 8x, and 12x. i will probably use the 5x

after all the tests i guess this is the best speed to be used , the most stable for the cheap backups

You can't do the actual flashing with iPrep, but what it does is prepare a folder for you.
It contains the DOS utilities "mtkflash" and "samtool", some batch files to simplify the use of mtkflash, and of course - the hacked firmware BIN.
iPrep also "customises" mtkflash for your chipset, based on the addresses you give it.

But here's what I do..

Used iPrep once only, (will never need again for repeated flashes) -- only to get the working MTKFLASH util.
Then I downloaded x360sam (yes I prefer this to samtool), and keycheck.

I dump all the stuff I need onto a USB stick.. and boot to DOS prompt with a Windows 98 CD.
My BIOS allows me to use the USB stick in DOS.  Yours needs to be able to either do that, or boot from USB.  Alternatively use a NTFS DOS boot CD.

Anyway "all the stuff" being:

mtkflash, x360sam, keycheck, and ix-13a.bin

- I use mtkflash to read and write to the drive
- x360sam to copy over the drive version and key into a new hacked BIN
- keycheck to make sure my original and the hacked BIN have matching keys

And that's all you need for flashing TS-Samsung drives.

You only need to do that for first time to read your firmware but if you done so already

Copy your orig.bin into the appropriate folder eg: 5x firmware for me
Run the "Make iXtreme firmware" batch file
This will create a ix13.bin file for flashing

Then make the bootable drive with iprep put the ix13.bin file you just made in the root of the usb drive
then in mtkflash type "mtkflash w /m /sata ix13.bin"
saves reading firmware all the time

Hi, quick Q... I made a copy of ORIG.bin and put it in the 5x fw folder, then did the "Make iXtreme firmware" step, and now its dumped a "ix13bin" into the folder.

When using iPrep, do I load the .bin that was just dumped as the firmware, or load the orig ix13.bin from Xbins into iPrep, and put the dumped ix13.bin I just made into the root of the boot device?

I ended up going for 8 speed on both my modded consoles. I did a test and in Mass Effect, the 8x loaded my level in 17 seconds whereas the 5x took 26s. So it shaved off 36% of the loading time and its just audible - the 5x was almost silent!

Thanks C4eva! Gonna give the 5x speeds a go. Sounds like the happy medium here.

2x speeds have worked fine for me on 1.2b but I'd like a bit of improvement in loading times.

Much appriciated bro. smile.gif

You load the ix-13C in iprep make sure you have updated you ixdef for the 1.3 version to load it format and make bootable drive
Then the ix13bin you made goes into the root of the boot device
when ready to flash type "mtkflash w /m /sata ix13.bin" with 10 sec trick
