Well ive run on the old 4x or slow speed... whatever that turns out to actually be and the 5x seems very similar as i spose it would.  I use a pioneer 112D and verbatim DL media so best i can basically.  Never had any read problems but mass effect had some texture poping problems on peoples faces where cut scenes wernt having time to load ect.

Tried it at 8x and i'm keeping it.  Its a tiny bit noisier but nowhere near the 12x afterburner mode.  Just a low wind noise. My talismon fan makes more of a whine and i'm considering swapping it out for the standard to keep the noise down.  I'm very fussy so that should show you that 8x really for me seems the good number. Especially when 12x might be a bit harsh on lasers with burnt media.

Id recomend 8 as a standard if i was helping a non techie friend who didnt want to mess about.

Try and see how it goes anyway.

Good scientist that I am, I actually performed the experiment.  Here are the times to load a level in Mass Effect:

5X: 30s
8X: 19s
12X: 18s

The disc was a Verbatim.  Needless to say I will be sticking with 8X.

I have a Samsung MS28 with 1.2c currently installed on it. All of my backups were created from originals on a Samsung 163A with XBMC, mostly (but not all) splitvid format, so there is no chance any of them are from questionable sources, or not properly created/stealthed. Is there any reason at all for me to want to upgrade to 1.3, aside from possibly a quieter DVD drive (I'm using 1.2c fast)?

Question:
I am currently running Xtreme4.1 and am ready to take the leap to iXtreme 1.3 and finally try and play online (been avoiding ban until everything seems safe).  Do I need to revert back to original firmware before flashing to iXtreme 1.3 or can I just use my original fw and mod it then reflash right from Xtreme 4.1?  I couldn't find a tutorial for my scenario but if anyone knows of a good one, please point me to the right place. TIA!

Yup - just use the orig.bin you have to create your new iXtreme 1.3 firmware, then flash over Xtreme 4.1.

What a quick response...thanks.  Also, I have definately used non-stealth backups and most of them will not work anymore.  With that being said would I have to wipe anything out like any game saves on the HDD before reflashing? Also, is there a utility to make ISO's stealth-ready if they aren't already? I'm assuming the answer to my 2nd question is NO and that I would just have to recreate backups from scratch.

Why restrict firmtool to auto spoofing? I have  ms25 orig but have always used ms28 firmware with no problems. We had the option to choose before? Thanks.

It was recommended that it be automated because of all of the confusion it created in the v1.0-1.2 releases.  You can dump your firmware from the drive and use that, use your hacked.bin from the last firmware creation, or use samtool if you would like that option.  Samtool and firmtool are essentially the exact same code, except for samtool not having benq support and automated spoofing.

Used the ixtreme from my last flash to create the 1.3 version. Bit more fiddling around, prefered the option to choose spoofing. Its not exactly rocket science is it? All ok anyway. Thanks caster.
