Flashing Hitachi 79fl With Software Only
« on: November 11, 2007, 04:26:00 PM »

Hello all,

In my attempt to find a software-only solution for the dreaded Hitachi 79FL drives, I stumbled across several posts of people asking whether or not a project was underway for this. So I'd like to create this post for just that: A place for people to bounce ideas off each other and test them. Now I'm not claiming I know anything about programming or hacking the thing, just thought I'd try to get the ball rolling.

Please keep your "soldering isn't that bad" posts for some other post. I want this to be for people who aren't interested in soldering. Play nice and let's try to collectively find a solution. Thanks!

Hey man, Im joining to the cause! Ive made a soldering disaster and my xbox360 is not dead but its impossible to solder a passkey or take out the sst chip without breaking the drive. I wish someone come up with a software solution to this. If only I had the knowledge to do it myself!. If someone has an idea, maybe I could help? The Hitachi 79 are the only drive in the market thats not flashable without a passkey. Damn you Bill! smile.gif

I had a customer the other day that tried doing passkey and detsroyed a ton of traces (BAD) most were gone. But drive still booted and worked fne. I said what the hell and put my passkey in it flashed it fine and plays copies fine now. So if drive is still booting originals just find someone who can solder (EXPERT) and you should still be able to flash it.

This has been a project for a long time.  A lot of people have looked into it to no avail.  Try reading the XBH forums for more information.

RUMOR: I read somewhere that Maximus is coming up with a software solution for this drive on January 2008.

I'm not too sure about this and I've never seen a post by Maximus or any High Rep member confirm this.

Talk about unsubstantiated  smile.gif We'll have to take that with a grain of salt but here's hoping (and that it comes out earlier than Jan 08).

Does Maximus have an official site? What is it?

Maximus makes the Firmware toolbox and the 79 passkey. Currently the 79 passkey is their only source of revenue from the Xbox 360 mod scene. And to confirm what other have posted yes they project that they will release a version of FWTB that can flash the Xbox 360 without the passkey but assure you folks they are in no hurry. They want to make money just like the rest of us. This excerpt is from their last release of FWTB and if you email them and ask them about it, they respond with “it is projected to be completed in January '08.” Sounds to me like it might already be completed if you have a projection wink.gif

WHAT IS NEXT ON FUTURE TOOLBOX VERSIONS ?:
------------------------------------------
   - Direct dump/flash of 79 drives
   - Smart Hack Patcher configurable by script (avoid hard coded rules)
   - Restore and Patch Wizards (for totally noobs)

For all of you who are patient feel free to wait  for the softmod and for the rest of us jump in and support Maximus. I did and it is not as hard as it looks. As long as you are careful there are not too many ways you can screw it up.

Hi Aliasgod12,

Thank you for your response. It's nice to see that Maximus it at least eventually going to release it. I agree, there's nothing wrong with trying to make money. Hell, I'll support them by purchasing the software! My only concern was the soldering, plain and simple. I know there are several people that don't have a problem with it, but I guess I'm out fighting on the other side for us that are a bit intimidated by the whole thing.

Thanks again!

Aliasgod12 and ss_hack 360,

Thanks so much for the info....

I've got a 79fl here staring me in the face....

My old xbox got banned and I loaned out my old one to my buddy who just bought a brand new unit (that I told him ahead of time I could mod)  who doesn't care about live and just wants to play backups... so i said ...great.. have alone of my old one and ill have your new one so i can mod it and get on live.. (till i get banned lol)  then i find out that his new 360 has the new hitachi 79fl drive that cant be softmodded...  DOH...

I've been looking everywhere for the latest update... and contemplated getting the passkey....  but I can wait till January or whenever... truthfully I dont play the damn thing too much... im more of a collector...  just in case i get some free time some weekend, i'll have the games ready.....  Im just now playing through the halo series with a buddy.. lol...     I also enjoy going to EB and listening to the morons complain about how expensive the games are or... " man.. i wish i could get these games.... "    hehe.. im an asshole arent I.....

Anyways.. I wanted to pass along my thanks... this is exactly the information i was looking for.... I have a brand new xbox arcade unit here that will stay in the box until January or whenever....  i'll just keep an eye on the xbox1 news ticker and play some halo 2 and rallisport challenge (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Cheers
Jagtown

I love these 'lets get the projected started' posts.  Basically it translates to 'someone please come up with a solution, cause I have no skills in this area and would like someone to make me a free solution soon.'

haha "BigSteel" - get a life man - what's your problem? Star Trek reruns aren't on tonight?

Jagtown: Thanks for your comments. I always appreciate when people are willing to play nice on these forums. Unfortunately, people like "Bigsteal" exist only to troll these forums and pretend to be intimidating. I mean, why the hell did he click on this topic anyway? Probably because he thought a free solution was in here and licked his lips in anticipation.

I ordered my passkey last week and am willing to try the solder job. I mean, what if something doesn't come out, right?

Oh, and "BigSteel", did you even read the part where I said "Hell, I'll support them by purchasing the software!"? Probably not - just quickly glanced for a free solution for himself (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Wouldn't be surprised, seeing as how CalgaryXboxMods doesn't even touch the Hitachi 79 - probably cause he can't solder for $hit and is looking for a solution so that he can sell someone else's work.

I love these "read a few free guides on the internet, and use someone else's free creative genius to ream people for $80 a pop for my complete lack of original skills." ...pathetic wanker.

(Forgive my lack of constructive comments on the topic, but b-slap sense was tingling)  dry.gif

???

Ah well, tried to have a small slice where people could chat about the 79s, but alas too many dumb-asses that have to hide behind the internet curtain and be bitches.

Moderators: You can close this thread. Just not worth it! I'll find somewhere else to chat.

If I had a 79 Hitachi, I'd pay Maximus 20$ for their release so I don't have to pay someone else to solder the passkey, or try it myself and potentially wreck my 360.
