79fl August 2007, Maximus Passkey, No Detection In Windows

I was going to mention the connectivity kit in the last post but I didn't want to ramble, especially if you didn't have one....... I saw all sorts of funnies with my connectivity kit  and the passkey, I did a lot of testing re making the 79 flashable after the passkey is removed....

it did something that seemes very weird at first...

Anyway I found that the connectivity was able to put the 79 in mode-b with the passkey in place, from looking at the 79 code, they didn't actually remove the 2 wire trick they just actually added an extra test to see if the the key is all 0x74's, if the key is blank the 79 will go mode-b by performing the 2-wire trick which is what the connectivity kit actually does, also found in this state the Passkey didn't function and the drive wouldn't read and acted up a lot....

Can't remember which position the switch needs to be in for it to work, in the end I just pulled the offening pin from the connector that goes into the drive and taped it off.. The pin comes out by just lifting the plastic tag with a sharp object.... It's the one with the white sewing pin in Textbooks tutorial, I hate using pin number as every document I read has a different scheme and none of the them are right....

Try this!

after some more severe testing, i've found that:

- after removing the maximus passkey, i tried to boot with slax, slax apparently boots ok, but i couldn't see if the drive is recognized because the letters scroll so fast, but in the end i get some green letters, but when i reser the computer windows doesn't "see" the drive.

- removed the flat cable installation, re-made the wire installation once again, tested the drive, i get the blue led, then i hit the eject but it doesn't eject and the drive doesn't show up on windows, then i check the installation for bridges and found a bridge on 2 of the tsop legs (which i never touched with my soldering iron), i remove the bridge with some desolder wick, test all the connections, everything is as expected, but the drive still doesn't show up on windows.

i'm using a connectivity kit, i think my last resort is using an xbox360 to power the drive, but i really think it's an incompability with my chipset, if i buy a pci sata card will it help me? (i've got an onboard VIA 8237 which is compatible with every other xbox360 drive, except hitachi79 which is my 2nd one with the same problem), if so, which SATA chipset should i buy?

Yea I have a 79FL August 2007, and somebody installed the passkey on it. The problem is whenever I turn the xbox on connected to the pc or not, the blue light goes on right away, but it blinks on and off ever 2secs. Seems like the drive isn't in modeB since it only takes one press to close the drive, also when connected to the TV it plays games and everything. When I connected to a pc the windows doesn't recognize it, when I use slax it obviously puts it in modeB and windows detects it, but it wont flash it. Is it a bad passkey installation, or what other suggestions do you guys have. Thanks
