Hitachi 79 Disaster...
« on: November 01, 2007, 02:36:00 PM »

Hi, I have tried to solder the passkey to my hitachi and couldnt, so i cant solder it anymore, there is no space left to solder the passkey. I tried to "eat" the left space but i went wrong, so there is really no space left to solder anything, i think there is 1 milimeter left before getting to the chip...

What should I do? The only thing that occurs me is to retrieve my unique key with another method, but i cant find how, or what to use, any detailed explanation? I searched with no luck.

One more question: could it be possible that in the future someone releases a soft method to flash the hitachi 79? or it has a hardware limitation and its only flashable with a passkey?

I feel really bad. I have soldering experience, but this took me to another level. Maybe i should pray to someone to realese a soft method.

Well, the board doesnt have where to sold anymore... byt the drive still works wonderfully because the rest is untouched.
I really appreciate your help but I live in Argentina, so its almost impossible to send it to you. Can you provide me with some info about doing it myself? I will be more carefull! (little humor doesnt hurt, doesnt it?(IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif))

I was thinking:

How about removing the epoxy left that surrounds the chip and push the flat cable with my hands to the chip? Then power on my xbox 360 without connecting the drive to my pc, wait til it flashes blue, stop pressing the cable to the chips legs, then connect the powered on drive to my pc, and then start the pc?

The thing is, there is no detailed tutorial about using the passkey.

If you didnt realise, im desperate.

Well, here is my mess:

(IMG:http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/203/joda1iq3.jpg)

I am really taking into consideration pushing the flat cable to the legs of the chip, then wait till it flashes blue and the remove the cable, the connecting the drive and then flash it. My only doubt is if i can flash without the passkey connected. Anyone? Please help!

Just curious what you used to remove the poxy? You should still be able to solder directly to the legs of the chip with wires instead of ribbons and read up on how to flash the 78 (minus slax cd since passkey will put the drive into mode B automatically).

holy crap!! what kind of soldering iron did you use?? if you can't solder, find someone that
can.

I've got a Metcal SMT soldering station.. instant heatup and doesn't melt traces unless
you intentionally dig hard into the PCB..

if you still have the connector, you can stand it up on it's edge and the ribbon cable plugs in
from the top. the pins should line up nicely to chip and you just need to put a small amount
of heat to tack the pins together..

its bad but can be easily be rebuilt by someone who can solder as long as you didnt mess up chip. Find someone that can solder and have them rebuild and use wires to get passkey working. Good luck

Good call there.  Tricky, but probably the easiest way to do it.  Depending on whether you're left or right handed will determine which end to start (I'm right handed so I'd start at the left-hand side and work right.

MAKE SURE you have solder wick.
MAKE SURE you know how to use solder wick.
CLICK HERE to see a damned good tutorial on the use of solder wick, it's where I learned from.

Just wait a couple months for a software based flashing method.

thanks everyone! i will try to do it myself again. i will go to the store, buy a new not so powerful solder, the best s and smallest wires and then pray to god. i will do it again tomorrow, stay tuned!:)

one thing: i didnt do this mess... in fact, it was a friend (he's an electronic engineer) , who, supposedly, has more experience than me... i only made some silly mods, like putting some leds on a dreamcast...:

Well guys, i tried but couldnt, thanks everyone for their support, but those 3 legs on the chip are impossible to me to solder. The drive still works ok. I will sell it or wait a soft flash without a passkey.

THE ONLY IMPORTANT QUESTION IS: could it be possible that a soft flash is released for hitachi 79? or the drive has a hardware limitation and the passkey is mandatory (even in the future) ? i could wait... but, if its IMPOSSIBLE, i will sell my 360 to someone who wont play blackups.

Thanks everyone!

nothing is impossible and nothing is guranteed smile.gif so you might have a wait of 2 weeks or 2 years

Could you not just get someone to remove the chip and reprogram in a programmer ?

Yeah, i was thinking about that. I could get someone or a programmer myself, any suggestion? which cheap programmer could i use?
