Is it possible to replace a 79FK with say a 78 or earlier Hitachi-LG?

From what I've read in this forum ... Yes! You can ... However ...

You will need to get the drivekey from the 79FK/FL and inject it into the pre-modded firmware of the 78 or eariler drive (use the Ixtreme 2.1 rev C firmware)

In order to do this you need to put the drive into mode-b with a Slax 2.x CD on the proviso you have a compatible SATA chipset on your PC or possibly with the 360USB (but I doubt ths USB kit will work but it's worth a try if you have it - I have one)

Before you do this however you will need to solder a Maximus or Infectus mod onto the drive to bypass the firmware lock, which will allow you to read the firmware and 'dump' it to your PC's HDD so that you can extract the 79FK/FL's drivekey.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

So, for you and others like myself I think the question is more like:

Q) "Why Spoof a 79FK/FL with an older H/LG drive"?

A) Drive is bricked or otherwise US and you need to replace it.

But if you didn't have the drivekey from the original drive before it went US or you can't un-brick the original drive, then you can't replace it anyways.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Thanks for the detailed reply! Yep this is similar to my situation. I do have the original firmware dumped from infectus. But my drive is acting wonky. Also some of the leads are damaged from installing the infectus. I think in the future I will just get an earlier version of the H-LG. Maybe one that even works with the X360 USB.

Also in this situation - Bricked 79FL but I did get the drive key with the 79passkey.

Is there anything special I have to do or do I just flash the new drive (47DJ) with the ixtreme for it with my key inserted?

Thanks.

Cool. All you need now is the Maximus Firmware Toolbox 4.x.

Use this to read the original bin file of your 79 drives firmware which will contain your drive key. Then use the same software to read the firmware of the drive you are using to replace the 79 - in your case the 47dj.

Now again use the same software to inject the drive key you got from the 79's original bin file into the modified 47dj bin file and write to the 47dj.

Most people seem to say that you sholud 1st flash the 47dj with the latest Ixtreme firmware before you do anything. And when doing that, 1st flash back to the original 47's bin file so that you get a clean flash to the Ixtreme.

There is a really cool tutorial for this in the tut section and it's much better than my explanation as it has clear, step-by-step guides with pictures to show what should be what.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)
