Are There 2 Samsung Drives Or Something?
« on: July 30, 2004, 03:52:00 PM »

Easy,

To see if you have a samsung drive, open the tray and if you have a big hole in the center and 2 other little round hole on both sides, you have a samsung. If you only have the big hole in the center and nothing else, you have either a philips or a thompson.

The original Xbox Samsung drive (SDG-605B)
and the SD-616T is a PC DVD drive that CAN be converted to Xbox, it's not an actual Xbox product (these drive were in some DELL systems).

Hope this helps you.

My friend has one of these drives, it's a 605f. It does not read any CD-Rs at all. The tray  looks exactly the same from what I can see, it labeled differantly though.

Check this picture out : http://w1.401.telia....16/L1010217.jpg

The only thing I'd like to know is if it would be possible to flash the firmware from an older drive to this. The 605b clearly reads all CD-Rs, atleast mines does.

BUMP

Post screenshots from Config Magic or something. What version of Xbox was it? Where did you buy them, and how do they work with other kinds of media (DVD+R, -R, and everything...). And try to flash the drive. It's very easy to do. Just hook up the drive to the pc (gotta make a little mod to connect power stick), put the IDE in, and boot your pc. Try to use Nero to check the drive properties (Nero shows drive settings from the drive's own bios).

wow that picture is interesting, this should be pinned as well

im a big advocate or "doing away with the myth that sammy is best" I hate the fact people bank off of modified drives just because of all the hype

I have a Philips that blows away the other three samsungs I have, never seen this 605F model, so this is interesting indeed

Just thought i'd add to this. Got a crystal 1.6 today with the new samsung drive in and it's as mentioned earlier. Reads all dvd's but won't touch any cd-r that i've got.... Just as well i've got two older sammys really.
